BAD TRACK AT MOBILE ♦ Only Most Sturdy Horse Able to Successfully Race Over it. » Remnant Profits by Belle H. and and Miss Maggie Being Left at Post in Sixth Race. * afOBOJC, Ala.. April 1.— Over a track that tested the endurance of the most sturdy .throughbrcd and made most of them falter at | eriods, racing continued over the Mobile Fair Grounds track and furnished entertainment for a hip crowd of uninitiated to the sport, rieasant weather was probably the chief reason for the big turnout, for there was nothing appealing in the card offered for decision. The starters in most of the races were ridden all over the track in an effort on the part of their riders to secure firmer footing. The course was replete with holes and stumbling was frecpient by most of the contenders. Those lucky to get an advantage at the send-off figured strongly in the result. Those with a rear position at the start were always outrun. Favorites were again in the limelight, though several staunchly backed ones were downed. The wagering was again light. The sixth race brought to the post some of the better class horses to race during the afternoon. It was over the abbreviated five-eighths distance and the five that contested we-,, on their bad post behavior fur when the start was effected it found Belle H. and Miss Maggie left at the post. Belle H. was completely unprepared when the barrier was released arid Miss Maggie would not start. I NPKF.rARED AT START. Urmnant had slightly the better of the send-off and she led for the entire distance, a handy winner from Annie Lyle, another one that was away fast. The result might have l een different had Belle II. gotten an even start for, though left at the post and over a sixteenth out of it when she began lacing after the others, she gained perceptibly and finished in third place. Belle H. was the favorite and it appeared decidedly careless of the starter to fail to note that she was not in a position to begin with the others. Miss Maggie is a chronic post actor and her failure not to get away could not be charged altogether to the starter. John ] ., favorite in the fifth, was another that was beaten, due primarily to his failure to get away on even terms with his opponents. He partly turned when the barrier was released and. though racing well, lie succumbed to Miss Aji on account of being furced to close an immense gap. C. Phillips, who figured prominently yesterday, rode Miss Aji, and this was his second success of the afternoon, as he had scored with Feter Brush in the third race. The contest marked a pronounced upset in the downfall of Futen, the odds-on choice. The opening race fell to Sir Ralph, which showed the way throughout and was never in danger of defeat. Shuffle was the short priced winner of tte meeting, the Wrack gelding paying thirty cents for a dollar, and his victory was narrowly achieved, only a small margin .separating him from Mary Connors at the end. «
