AMERICAN SON SCORES Wins First Kentucky Purse of Year for La Brae Stable Easily Defeats Light Carbine in inWatterson Watterson Hotel Handicap Handicapat at Louisville LOUISVILLE Ky May 20 The Watter ¬ son Hotel Handicap at one mile for a purse of 1800 brought a quartette to the post and enabled the La Brae Stable to earn its first purse in these parts when American Son was an easy winner from Light Carbine with Old Slip a short distance back of the pair The mile out of the chute was cov ¬ ered in 1 3S 3SIT IT P Whitneys erratic Coronation delayed the start by his fractious post behavior and a continuous attempt to run away and breaking through the barrier When the start came jt found him away well and he moved into a good lead followed by Ameri ¬ can Son and Light Carbine Old Slip had left tardily but Pool rode him hard and wrested the lead from Coronation in the first half mile Old Slip gave promise when rounding into the stretch as he was still in front but the early usage he had been put to caused him to tire and he was easily over ¬ hauled by American Son in the last eighth Light Carbine also finishing fast got up in the last strides for second place placeIDEAL IDEAL WEATHER WEATHERIdeal Ideal weather prevailed during the after ¬ noon and a large crowd was on hand to view the sport An air of sadness pervaded the grounds on account of the sudden death this morning of Col Andrew Vennie the courte ¬ ous resident manager of the track He was intimately known by the habitues of the Churchill Downs clubhouse clubhouseThe The erratic Indianapolis furnished an upset when she won handily in the opening race that brought to the post some good sprint ¬ ers She headed the leaders when reaching the stretch and held Dolly Bay safe in the final eighth Dolly Bay made a game effort but was not good enough Third place went to Gladrags which came with a rush in the last eighth Carrie Belle enabled W C Weant to earn his first purse of the season She won over nine other maiden fillies that started in the second race Wood Nymph the favorite finished in second place while Majoe took third The finish here was a spectacular one with the three leaders many lengths in ad ¬ vance of the others driving hard and fin ¬ ishing separately by small margins Carrie Belle displayed high speed from the start and benefitted when she saved much ground in the stretch stretchEager Eager racing in his best form led home eleven other platers in the third race He won from Resourceful with Pretty Politician Fn third place Pretty Politician showing most speed enjoyed a good lead in the early stages but was passed by Kager when ap ¬ proaching the stretch Kager had little dif ¬ ficulty during the last eighth to hold the fast coming Resourceful safe while Pretty Poli ¬ tician tiring badly just managed to with ¬ stand Black Crackles rush to save third place placePretty Pretty Politician was claimed by K Pitt at a cost of 2200 2200PORT PORT STAR WINS EASILY EASILYEdward Edward B McLeans homebred Port Star by The Porter Starclla gave a sparkling exhibition in the fourth race to win with ease from some highly regarded ones when he led for the entire fiveeighths trip by a wide margin and won as his rider pleased T erringer finished in second place and also showed a game effort for he was away slowly and had to close an immense amount of ground during the last eighth to land the middle portion of the purse Royal Julian also came strong in the last sixteenth to overhaul Khalifa The later raced promi ¬ nently and only gave up second place in the last twenty yards yardsEdward Edward B McLean scored a double when Princes of Wales accounted for the days secondary feature and scored as easily as his stablcmate Port Star had done Prince of Wales had eight highly regarded ones as opponents at the five and a half furlongs distance He was an outstanding favorite and his backers were somewhat dubious of his success when he failed to take command in his customary style He had began slightly unprepared and Williams rode him into a pocket causing him to be outrun by Reputa ¬ tion Williams however took his mount back just before reaching the stretch and went to the outside of Reputation He in ¬ stantly took a long lead which he increased in the last sixteenth to win as his rider pleased Reputation held on well and was just as easily second with Rural Route out ¬ staying the others for the smaller portion of the pursft
