TRAVELLER JAMAICA WINNER Captures Garden City Claiming Stakes in W J Salmon Colors Fator Displeases Stewards by Itidinf of ofSankari Sankari Case Referred to toJockey Jockey Club NEW YORKt N Y May 20 Walter J Salmons Traveller was winner of the Gar ¬ den City Claiming Stakes at Jamaica today This was the closing stake feature of the twenty day meeting of the Metropolitan Jockey Club and racing will move over to Belmont Park Friday for the twenty day meeting of the Westchester Racing Associa ¬ tion tionFor For the last day at the Jamaica track there was another big crowd on hand and weather and track conditions were excellent The sport was not without its disappoint ¬ ments when in a twoyearold race three of the starters were ridden past the recall flag and two of them completed the journey One of these was Sankari which seemed to have a good winning chance This naturally eliminated him from the actual running of the race Then in another threequarters mile handicap Titan which had an excellent winning chance was virtually left at the post After the performance of Fator on San ¬ kari the stewards were not satisfied with his handling of his mount and his offense was referred to the stewards of The Jockey Club for any action they might see fit to take His double offense was first in run ¬ ning past the recall flag and then in pulling up Sankari in the race following immediately after the false start His punishment was for not persevering with Sankari in the race Then of course the news of the untimely death of Col Andrew Vennie in his office at Churchill Downs cast a decided gloom over the sport for the day so that the last day of racing at Jamaica was anything but a happy one Only three went to the post for the running of the Garden City Claiming Stakes and when Johnny Maiben brought Traveller home the winner over the mile and a sixteenth distance it completed a double for him In the previous race he won with Claptrap ClaptrapG G Winfreys Watts raced into second place in the Garden City Claiming Stakes and the Rancocas Stables Crystallite was a bad third Watts was the one to set the pace but Maiben was just rating Traveller along back of him and riding a patient race Nearing the stretch turn Fator was shut off in a threehorse race when he attempted to send Crystallite through between the other two This knocked his mount back and he could never regain the lost ground Right Continued on sixteenth pagej TRAVELLERJAMAICA WINNER Continued from first page at the end Traveller disposed of AVatts rather handily The race was worth 2475 to the punishment of Fator He was disciplined for not asking Sankari to run after the colt had just completed a gruelling five eighths mile journey Had he asked San ¬ kari to give his best he doubtless would have done the colt a grave injury and it seemed the humane thing to save him from such abuse abuseMrs Mrs R Alexanders St John ridden by R Haviland accounted for the opening race of the afternoon Jn a hard drive over AAr L Olivers Fiddlesticks while Mrs A Swenkes i Byway was third Thirteen platers con ¬ tested the race over the threequarters dis ¬ tance and fwllowing some delay at the post the field left in poor alignment Fiddlesticks drew away into an easy lead and Gareth Commissioner Cahill and Byway raced after him while the others were strung out with Zero Hour bringing up the rear Rounding tlie far turn Commissioner Cahill and Gareth felt the early pace and dropped back while Byway made his bid entering the stretch Fiddlesticks however had something left and under urging drew clear In the mean ¬ time Haviland was working his way on the inside with St John and found clear sail ¬ ing throughout He closed with a rush and just got up in the final stride to take the measure of Fiddlesticks Byway was a driving third over Hot Time TimeThe The stupidity of three riders made a joke of the fiVeeighths of the second race These riders rode on by the recall of the flag in a false start and took so much out of their mounts as to have absolutely no chance in the actual race raceThe The offenders were L Fator on the Ran cocas Stables Sankari Eddie Barnes on Jim Crow from the Samuel Ross stable and L McAtee who rode AVhiskery for Harry Payne AVhitney McAtee was first to realize his mistake and he pulled AVhiskery up in the stretch but Fator and Barnes went on to the end with Sankari finishing first though he had to be driven at the head of the stretch to make the score certain certainAVhen AVhen the three were returned to the post a good start was effected but Fator natur ¬ ally eased Sankari out of it early and Barnes took up Jim Crow though McAtee went on part of the way with AAThiskery Master AVilliam with the advantage of being pulled up promptly by Ambrose after the false start proved the winner when he ran down J AV Beans Olive Dexter and it was Bostonian a stablemate to AVhiskery which raced to the place when he disposed of Olive Dexter in the run through the stretch stretchRather Rather a nice band came together in the six furlongs handicap that was run as the third and it resulted in a victory for Clap ¬ trap from the Log Cabin Stud Stable when he led home Samuel D Riddles Crusader and P S P Randolphs Pheasant just nosed out Frank Browns Titan for third E J Morrows Flag of Truce was the only other starter starterClaptrap Claptrap left the post fast and he had speed enough to show the way from end to end with Crusader second practically all of the way It was the first appearance of the year for Mr Riddles colt and his nice was an impressive effort and one to suggest that he will quickly take his place among the good ones onesIn In this Titan was particularly unfortunate when he was virtually left at the post He closed an immense gap but right at the end Sande did not persevere as he should and thereby he lost the third The race run by Titan suggested that he might have been the winner with an equal break breakThere There was a big field of cheap ones went to the post for the mile and seventy yards of the fifth and it brought a good finish when G D AVideners Sabina after having forced all the pace just lasted to beat Indian Trail from the Everglade Stable with Claudius from the Princess Anne Stable beating Aulcain Park for third thirdAs As the race was run it seemed that Indian Trail was best He was shuffled back going to the first turn and far out of it in the back stretch He worked his way through but was forced to go to the outside at the head of the stretch and all this took so much out of him that Sabina was able to outgain him in the final sixteenth sixteenthThreeyearolds Threeyearolds maidens to race three quarters was the final number and it brought out some smart looking ones with Sir Stu ¬ art from the Log Cabin Stud Stable the most highly thought of in the race raceThe The estimate of Sir Stuart was eminently correct for he took the track with the start to win all the way Bluefish racing for Marshall Field took second place and Gif ford A Cochrans Endless was third Johnny Maiben had the mount on Sir Stuart and it gave him a score of three winners as well as a double for the Log Cabin Stud Stable its other winner being Claptrap ClaptrapNews News of the sudden death of Col Andrew Aennie at Churchill Downs cast a gloom over the racing at Jamaica and horsemen generally were greatly shocked at his pass ¬ ing Many messages ot condolence were telegraphed Colonel Winn his associate and best friend
