COGWHEEL IN FRONT Leads Rivals Home in the Naper ville Handicap Bad Day for Form Followers FollowersFavorites Favorites Going Down to toDefeat Defeat with Regularity AURORA III June 2 Cogwheel carry ¬ ing the colors of Mrs E Vayand accounted for the Naperville Handicap which featured the card at Exposition Park this afternoon The Spa raced to second place with Miss Jennie a bang up third Jockey D Smith sent Miss Jennie into the lead shortly after the start with The Spa and Deep Thought following Cogwheel displaced Deep Thought after going the first half mile This order was unchanged until well inside the final eighth post where Coijwheel found an open ¬ ing next the inner rail When put to a drive Cogwheel responded courageously and drew clear in the last few yards It was only in the closing strides that The Spa headed the tiring pacemaker Miss Jennie Chink raced up into a contending position on the ouL ide at the tvrn for home but tired during the stretch run Faenza closed much ground from a slow beginning and finished going strongly in fourth position Ideal conditions prevailed and an excellent midweek crowd witnessed the racing which was featured by many keen stretch struggles and exciting finishes It was a bad day for the form followers as the favorites were l owled over with regularity Second choices were more successful however and accounted for several of the contests contestsCITIZEN CITIZEN HARD FltESSEI FltESSEIAlthough Although he showed the way throughout Citizen was called upon for his best effort in the closing stages of the sixth race to retain a slight advantage Masquerade after Setting away very badly closed an immense I3 p was rapidly wearing the winner down and raced as if best Gus R well up from the start held the others safe on end endFinishing Finishing with a rush outside through the final eighth Gilmore got up in the last few yards to snatch the victory from Smoky 3ay in the opening dash Smoky Day opened up an easy early lead and appeared an easy winner an eighth out but tired during the last fifty yards Bitsy Bee always close up was tiring and doing her best to the end to outlast Only Star StarShowing Showing the way by a comfortable margin from the start McCrimmon was never in serious trouble during the running of the second race Floy Lillie was always in clos ¬ est pursuit of the winner saved ground all the way but was doing her best at the end to outlast Maude Harvey The latter raced uji into contending position after going the first quarter and finished fast Chester brook ran disappointingly had clear sailing on the outside of his opponents in the stretch but failed to improve his position positionSECOND SECOND SUCCESS FOR TOM P PK K McCowns Tom P scored his second success of the meeting when he took the measure of some good sprinters in the fourth race Down Town Agnes Call and Tom P was the order to the stretch lead An eighth out Down Town gave up and Agnes Call showed in front with Tom P in close attendance AVhen the final test came Tom P proved the gamer and headed Agnes Call in the final stride Red Heart gradually im ¬ proved his position and held the others safe jit the end Rail Gee and Agnes Call were unruly at the post and delayed the start for eight minutes minutesTaUng TaUng command shortly after the start Alice Lang retained a safe lead throughout the third race Dust Flower retired from serious contention during the last sixteenth and Flight secured second place in a drive from Shindy Flight raced in closest pursuit of the leaders for most of the way but Shindy came from the rear during the stretch test ami finished very fast It was only after a hard drive that Devil Cirl lasted to earn the verdict by a head from the fast finishing Sagamook in the closing dash Devil Girl moved up into a contending position while rounding the far turn but Mozer on Sagamook delayed his bid until reaching the final eighth He fin ¬ ished in cyclonic fashion and just failed to make it Mabel Seth the early pacemaker quit to a walk in the last seventy yards which enabled Nereid to get third third1roceeds 1roceeds was claimed from the Derby Stable by C R Aldricb for 2000 2000JI JI li Rrown Stock Farm claimed Smoky Day for JSOO out of the first race Chester brook was claimed by S McNeil for 2000 out of the second secondClint Clint Dewitl trainer of the Dearborn Stable reports that Thomas Rrady an exercise box under contract to the stable has deserted his employ without his consent and warns other horsemen irt t to harbor the boy He i be ¬ lieved to be at some of the New York or Canadian trades
