2 The Wednes ¬ day stake feature at Belmont Park was the Harlem at a mile under claiming conditions for threeyearolds and over It brought a stirring finish when Applecross from the Sage stable just lasted to win from Mrs R I Millers Roland and Frank Browns King Jimmy beat Jefferson Livingstons Mc Auliffe for third The race was worth 3550 to the winner winnerThe The day was a delightful one for the sport and while it was not a program of t especial merit a big crowd was on hand and there was no lack of enthusiasm In several of the contests the fields were small and in one the third which fell to Croyden an 1 unfortunate start just about decided the running but altogether it was a real day of sport sportIn In the Harlem there was some delay at the post but the field was sent away in good alignment Applecross beginning from the inside position went iitto command with Montferrat and McAuliffe in close attend ¬ ance The three sprinted away from the others in the first quarter and it was King Jimmy that was leading the others othersMontferrat Montferrat was first to tire chasing along with Applecross and that left McAulIife in second place and galloping strongly but it was evident that something had been taken i out of him going with the early pace And I still Johnny Callahan kept Applecross at his task and he was clear of the others An i eighth out Fields drove McAuliffe in a vain i effort to catch Applecross and it was the i last bid of the Livingston gelding He be ¬ gan to tire from that point pointIn In the meantime King Jimmy was begin ¬ ning to race in earnest on the outside while Roland came through on the inner rail Right to the end they both continued to i draw up on Applecross but Callahan kept his tiring mount going long enough to have I Continued ou eleventh page APMOSS TAKES HARLEM Continued from first pace him the winner while Roland beat King Jimmy by a narrow margin for second place placeIt It wasrather a nice band of maiden juve ¬ niles that met in the four and a half furlongs of the fifth race and General Lee from Wil liain Woodwards Belair Stud Stable was the winner At the end he was doing his best to beat John K Maddens James A Farley and Harry Payne Whitneys Bostonian was JL close third The others were beaten off and followed in close order orderAs As the race was run it is probable Bosto nian was best Ho met with considerable in ¬ terference and did not have a fair racing chance until too late When lie found room to stride freely he was closing on the first i the winner at the full threequarters threequartersGeneral General Lee the winner is a son of War Cloud and Nancy Lee and a sort that will surely go on to better things James A Far icy is a son of Luke McLuke and Vireo of good size and with more education he will make good and the same may be promised for Bostonian This Whitney colt is a son of Broomstick and Yankee Maid that still1 needs racing education educationIt It was a good finish that came out of the opening four and a half furlongs dash when Daffodil from the Kverglade Stable was just winner from the Wheatley Stables Sturdy Stella and J I McGoverns Victrix a fast finishing third This was Tor two j yearold fillies under claiming conditions uhd Victrix was easily best but J Mergler j was of no assistance to her with Kllison on j Daffodil and Stevens on Sturdy Stella out striding him in the final stages Cham the Gifford Cochran starter showed early speed but Sturdy Stella and Daffodil were close after her and they both soon had her headed Mergler was unable to keep Victrix up in the early running but she closed resolutely on her own courage and would have been the winner in a few more strides stridesAlex Alex Gordons Banton had only to gallop in front of his company to be winner of the race at a mile for threeyearolds that was the second offering This was a condition race in wliich Banton carried top weight of 114 pounds He was only opposed by William Zieglcr Jrs Araby Gifford A Cochrans Flat Iron B C Segars Son Ami and Mrs 1C M HUts First Aid Of these Flat Iron was the only one to give a semblance of a contest in the early racing and the effort to keep within hailing distance of Banton cost him second place He tired badly in the final eighth and there Smith brought Araby along with a rush to take second place Flat Iron though tiring badly easily beat Son Ami for third place and First Aid was even further back backThe The mile handicap that was third was somewhat marred when of the four starters Spot Cash wheeled and was almost left and Sunspero caught unawares was slightly sideways as the barrier arose The other two Harry Payne Whitneys Croyden and the Salubria Stables Florence Nightingale were away runiiiHg and while the filly was well Florence Nightingale away when the stretcli was reached and in the meantime Sande had closed a big gap with Sunspero and turning for home he was in second place but it had cost much effort to make up the grouiid and while he was going better than Croyden at the end the Whitney gelding was safely home the winner
