I TURF NOTES FROM BOWIE f • i BOWIE, Md., April 12. H. Gross claimed Smacker out of the sixth race, and J. McAuliffe took Star Bright from the same race. Both were ,500 propositions. The reason for the withdrawal of Mrs. James Arthurs two-year-old Water Lad from the first race was a severe attack of fever. His temperature reached 105 degrees, according to reports. Trainer E. J. McBride bought the juvenile filly Carolyn I ee from E. .T. Griffith for the account of W. W. Ix oney, Philadelphia turfman. Mr. Looney plans several other additions to his string witliin the near future. I onald Mergler. who has been laid up with an attack of influenza, accepted his first mount today.
