HYDROMEL DERBY STARTER Trainer Stewart Announces Colt Will Be Sure Contestant for Big Prize. LEXINGTON, Ky., May 2.— Senator J. N. Camdens Hydromel, which established a new track record on the occasion of his 1927 debut last week, furthered his conditioning for the rapidly appearing Kentucky Derby by galloping the Derby route of one mile and a quarter this morning. Trainer Danny Stewart ordered jockey L. McDermott to keep the chestnut son of Light Brigade and Honeydew under stout restraint throughout the trial and was thoroughly satisfied when the colt traversed the distance in 2 :12%. It was nothing more than a "breeze" and the three-year-o!d was not the slightest distressed following the gallop. From a time standpoint the gallop was nothing worthy of elation, but the easy manner in which the horse accomplished his task impressed all who witnessed the move. He carried his full Derby weight and, breaking at the quarter pole, negotiated the first quarter in :25Vand, half-mile in :50%, three-quarters in 1 :17, mile in 1 :45 and mile and an eighth in 1 :58%. Following the workout trainer Stewart announced that the colt is a certain starter in the Churchill Downs classic. Hydromel was the only intended starter in the race to take to the association course this morning. Hydromel and 14 others of the Camden band that Stewart has here will be shipped to Churchill Downs tomorrow morning. Mr. Camdens gocd mare, Rothermel, which has been resting at Hartland Stud since her strenuous winter campaign at Miami, will rejoin the stable at the Louisville track. Rosooe Goose has a division of the Camden Stable at the Downs.
