CHANCE SHOT WINS RICH BELMONT STAKES RACE WORTH 69910 Carries J E Wideners Colors to Notable Triumph Buddy Bauer Finishes Unplaced National Stallion Stakes to toH H P Whitney NEW YORK N T June llJoseph E Wideners Chance Shot the magnificent son of Fair Play and Quelle Chance just about proved himself champion of the threeyear olds when he was an easy winner of the one mile and a half Belmont Stakes The prize was worth 60910 to the winner and the consummate ease with which the colt scored left no doubt of his being the three yearold of the year He was best from the rise of the barrier and there was no time when he was really threatened William Zieg ler Jrs Bois De Rose by a magnificent rush at the end was second a length and a half back of the Widener champion which was being eased up by Sande and right at his heels was William Woodwards Flam bino beating the Sage Stables Rip Rap easily while Edward R Bradleys Buddy Bauer winner of the Fairmount Derby was still further back and leading home the Saga ¬ more Stables Gold Coin the only other starter starterIt It was the closing day of the Westchester Racing Association meeting at beautiful Bel ¬ mont Park and it was the most brilliant pro ¬ gram of the meeting a program that brought out a tremendous crowd crowdThe The most important companion feature to the Belmont wns the National Stallion Stakes and this fell to Harry Payne Whit ¬ neys Groucher while Earl Sande had tho mount on both of the stake winners The National Stallion Stakes had a value of 22 710 710ONLY ONLY TWO ABSENTEES ABSENTEESLaddie Laddie and Account were the only absen ¬ tees from the overnight entries for the Bel ¬ mont Stakes and it was generally agreed that they did not figure in the race so their elimination caused no concern No time was lost at the barrier and the six were sent away in excellent allignment with McAuliffe hustling the filly Flambino into an early lead leadShe She began from the outside position and it was an effort to save ground on the turn that induced McAuliffe to hurry Chance Shot had the inside position and Sande holding to that place beat the filly to the corner and he was showing the way From wayFrom that time it was Chance Shot all the way He was under steady restraint and Flambino raced alongside of him with Gold Coin at the heels of the filly and Buddy Bauer racing well in fourth place There was daylight back of the Bradley hope and then followed Rip Rap running along next to the rail and Bois De Rose in the rear He was going leadersIt well but many lengths from the leaders It was not until a mile and an eighth of the mile and a half had been covered that Chance Shot drew away from Flambino and as she shook off the filly Sande never eased his hold on the son of Fair Play At that stage of the race Alfred Johnson made a move on the outside with Buddy Bauer and for a few strides the Fairmount Derby win ¬ ner moved up gallantly gallantlyODonnell ODonnell called on Rip Rap at the same time and he also improved his position but Flambino was not through by any means and she still had them both headed as the field swung into the stretch stretchBy By that time Chance Shot was speeding along three lengths to the good and under restraint and at the same time Bois De Rose under a rousing ride by Fator was making up ground rapidly on the outside Both Buddy Bauer and Rip Rap tired badly under punishment and still Bois De Rose continued to gain until he was alongside of Flambino In the meantime Sande had eased Chance Shot dangerously and as a result the Ziegler colt was just a length and a half back of him at the end endHad Had Sande asked Chance Shot to run In the stretch he would have won by a much bigger margin marginEASY EASY FOR GROUCHEK GROUCHEKHarry Harry Payne Whitneys Groucher after several failures had all the best of it in the National Stallion Stakes when Sande beat the barrier with him and the race was virtually decided at the start Sending him away into a long lead Sande had only to sit still and hold the colt together to hold others perfectly safe and at the end he was still four lengths to the good The Sagamore Stables Scotch and Soda raced to second place when he outgamed the Wheatley Sta ¬ bles Diavolo and Distraction only saved Continued on twentysecond page CHANCE SHOT VICTOR Continued from first page third from the Grecntree Stables Glade by a nose There was some delay at the barrier for which both Distraction and Groucher were to blame Then when the barrier rose Groucher left running while Distraction bore in slightly and almost everything else in the company was in a tangle Sande made excel ¬ lent use of his advantage and his mount was at no time forced to do his best bestDistraction Distraction was in second place to the final eighth post but he could not cut down the lead of thp Whitney colt and then when the real racing began he was no match for Scotch and Soda The others were at no time serious contenders contendersThe The National Stallion Stakes was over the fiveeighths distance and Groucher ran the distance in 59 against a strong head wind The prize was worth 22710 to the winner winnerA A mile for platers of the better quality was the first offering and C L Carroll furnished the winner in Athel when he led home John Lowes Clear Sky with Bert Pomeroys Tyson just beating William Zieglers Colorful for third place placeAthel Athel led the pace and was no time threat ¬ ened but it must be said on behalf of Clear Sky that he did not have the best of luck Barnes was forced to race along the outside with him all the way and he lost several lengths on the turn into the stretch Through the last eighth he closed resolutely and while he was still a length and a half back of the winner he easily disposed of the others othersThe The Cherry Malotte Steeplechase named for a favorite mare that raced through the field for the Greentree Stable some years back was won by Jolly Roger of that same stable He was ridden by Specs Crawford and the only one to oppose him was Endicott comparatively green fencer in the Joseph E Davis stable stableThrough Through the early race Crawford permitted Cheyne to make pace with Endicott and he rated the big chestnut back of him until the back field was reached There he sent Jolly Roger into the command and while Endicott hung on with becoming courage for the rest of the journey the Greentree gelding held him perfectly safe all the way to be winner by four lengths
