daughter of the re ¬ nowned Man o War Yokohama took the measure of the crack Mary Jane in the Illi ¬ nois Oaks carrying a net value to the win ¬ ner of 5120 Mary Jane finished in second place and Patricia Marian just managed to outstay Handy Mandy for third place The race was run in the good time of 1 54 Eight fillies started startedMary Mary Jane enjoyed overwhelming favor ¬ itism and flattered her many hackers when she moved into a good lead after displacing Damosel She appeared to have the race won on reaching the stretch turn but sud ¬ denly Connelly began employing the whip and Yeddo which had been close in pursuit began cutting down her lead perceptibly and there was a shout of chagrin when the Texasowned filly suddenly passed the fa ¬ vorite to win an easy victory Prior to the start Yeddo caused some ex ¬ citement by breaking through the barrier and dashing off for threesixteenths before jockey M Fator succeeded in getting her under con ¬ trol When the start came sh2 was with the leaders and forced the pace for the first half mile At this stage her rider began tak ¬ ing her back sharply but she continued at a steady pace ard when called on readily over ¬ hauled Mary Jane Janei i SURPRISE VICTORY VICTORYYeddo Yeddo first graduated into the winning ranks at New Orleans when C E Durnell took over the Three Ds Stables extensive Ixand of racers but her performances since that victory have been ordinary and she was given but slight consideration as a possibility to take Mary Janes measure this afternoon Patricia Marian and Handy Mandy raced well in the race but Krick ran disappoint ¬ ingly inglyHomewodd Homewodd finally came into its own for todays attendance was the greatest in the tracks history Activities and in ¬ terest in the sport was commensurate with the big crowd It was highly pleasing to the management that the course is finally securing the recognition the untiring efforts of the management to provide the best there is in the sport deserve There has been a constant improvement in all departments during the week and it is mounting steadily steadilySecretary Secretary Joe McLennan provided a racing offering this afternoon that appealed to the full strength of racing enthusiasts in this section and brought to the course persons prominent in society pojitical and business spheres It was an attendance that any course could well be proud of ofSurrounding Surrounding the Illinois Oaks were the Lakeshore Handicap and the Nip and Tuck Purse Each brought out some of the best in these parts and resulted in spiritedly fought contests The handicap fell to Flag ¬ staff wfiich beat home George De Mar and Banton after a furious drive through the stretch stretchCUDGELLER CUDGELLER SCORES II G Bedwells Cudgeller was victor in the Nip and Tuck Purse He beat home Rival and Sixty The trio at all times dominated the race but the winner only managed to shake off his rivals in the last sixteenth Rival and Sixty continued their hardfought effort until the final stretch strides Rival getting the place by a matter of inches inchesH H P Gardner annexed the opening race with his Seventeen Sixty in a spectacular duel with Polita and Dan Burnham The trio finished heads apart with Domesticated also only a short distance in the back of the leaders Seventeen Sixty was a promi ¬ nent factor from the start wearing down Domesticated in the last eighth and gamely withstanding the determined bid made by Polita and Dan Burnham in the final drive Isostasy was the favorite in the race but Pool gave him an amateurish ride and took him back sharply for no reason while in a contending position He rode him weakly through the stretch With a better ride he Vould have figured strongly in the result tiThe Bloomfield Stables Marshall Ney ca ¬ pably ridden by the diminutive P Hebert was home winner of the second race which brought a dozen good platers to the post Big Sweep was the favorite here and after racing in and an eighth when she beat home Scampaway with Extra Edition following The winner was favored by her light impost and she wore down Scampaway in the last quarter to win well in hand Scampaway held on well in the final drive to land in second place Saga mook closed a big gap and but for losing much ground by racing wide during the last threeeighths would have been a strong contender
