Foaled in 1897, Mitten was by King Eric — Tara Blackburn, by Luke Blackburn. Her claim to fame rests upon the fact that her produce probably won more races than the produce of any other brood mare in this country, so far as is known. Certainly, they have won a great many races, without a commensurate return in money, the reason being that the majority of them were won in the far West, in purses of small value. Her first foal arrived in 1903. the last in 1920. There was a controversy over her second foal, her owners. Egan Bros., of Pctaluma, Calif., claiming that Sevenfull, which is the Stud Book as being by Edinborough — Beatrice S., by The Commoner, was in reality daughter of Mitten, but by mistake when registering a band of youngsters was ascribed the wrong dam. There is no record whether or not convincing evidence was produced establish the fact. So far the undisputed produce of Mitten have won 212 races. Sevenfull won thirty- : eight. Subject to deduction her races were credited to Mitten, which increases the total to 250. King Worth won the largest number, 50 ; Coppertown was second with 49. , If we include the number of races won by Mitten herself and by her grandchildren, the , total would reach 361 races won and 99,197 in money.
