MEMORABLE DAYS RACING ♦ . Lincoln Handicap Day of 1927 and the Wonderful Race. » Vividly Recalled By Near Closing of Entries for This Years Stakes to Be Itun at Lincoln Fields. A memorable days racing in the vicinity of Chicago was held on July 9, 1927, at beautiful Lincoln Fields, near Crete, 111. It was Lincoln Handicap day. A glorious summer day. From near and far came one of the most representative gatherings seen on a Chicago race course, a colorful gathering that fitted well in the gorgeous setting of the marvelous club house at Lincoln Fields. Nor was the field for the Lincoln Handicap less colorful. Here was the equine aristocrats of the thoroughbred world, superb and gifted creatures, some of the best from the Fast come to measure" strides with the best of the West. Such splendid specimens as Chance Play. Flat Iron, Princess Doreen, Rhinock, Jock. Percussion. Display, Cotlogo-mor, Rothermel, need no introduction to the racing public. And the race : The start found the entire band off in fairly good order, with Chance Play, ridden by the peerless Sande. at once sprinting into the lead and securing a vantage position next the rail. Princess Doreen, at this stage, was second, with Flat Iron, which had been tardy at the start, finding his lacing legs and also coming into a prominent place. The leading trio then raced necks apart until the lower turn was reached, where Chance Play began drawing out with Princess Doreen giving way to Flat Iron. The latter made a determined bid when straightened out in the stretch, but it was ineffectual and of short duration. He, however, had no difficulty outstaying Princess Doreen which, in turn, had to be urged hard to retain third place from the fast finishing Rhinock. The latter had been one of the rear guard during the first three-quarters, but he came gallantly through the stretch. Display, the other easterner, did not cut much figure in the r«ee, and the outstanding disappointment in the western brigade was Hydromel. The winner of the 1927 American Derby was always in the wake of many of Continued on tenth i age.i , 1 ; " ! J " j e e MEMORABLE DAYS RACING! Sandes return to the judges stand was a signal for an ovation seldom accorded a jockey and the cheers of the multitude continued to follow him during the entire trip to the jockeys room after he had weighed in. . Sande rode one of his most brilliant races. , He was always in command, but he kept his mount close to the rail during the entire journey and saved much ground, as well as his mounts energy, for any eventuality that might arise during the last part of the race. It was a splendidly run race, devoid of any interference, and the fast pace that was i maintained for the entire distance was responsible for a new track record for the mile and a Quarter distance — Chance Play-setting the new mark at 2:04y5, which was two and three-fifths seconds faster than the time made by the track record holder, Blarney Stone. Glorious memories ! They bring expectations of another wonderful Lincoln Handicap day at an even more beautiful Lincoln Fields. For when the improvement ordered by president Stuyvesant Peabody and ex- ecutive director Matt J. Winn are completed Lincoln Fields will be one of the most mar- velous race tracks in the World. It is only natural to surmise that all the foremost turfmen of the country will be represented at the 1928 Lincoln Fields meeting, which will be held from July 2 to July 28, inclusive. Surely none will miss having entries for the 5,000 Lincoln Handicap and other features, which include the Marquette Handicap of 5,000 added, the Chicago Heights Handicap of 0,000 added, the Crete Handicap, Joliet and Dearborn Stakes, each of ,000 added.
