LOUISVILLE, Ky.. April 12— Displaying the same impressive form that has characterized all of his training gallops this year. Misstep, the Le Mar Stables main reliance for the Kentucky Derby, turned In the best Derby trial of this morning at Churchill Downs. The son of Upset — St. Theresa, with Joe Peters up and carrying his full Derby weight, went out with Mop Up, the stables other Derby eligible, and the older horse Profiteer, for a gallop of three-quarters mile, and the manner in which Misstep acquitted himself brought forth much favorable comment from the work watchers who lined the back stretch. The trio broke from the three-quarters post and Misstep forging to the front, led all the way under restraint. He ran along with a frictionless stride, and in a manner that was most convincing. The watches caught him the quarter in :24. half in :49, and the three-quarters in 1 rlS3. This and the other trials were conducted over a track that was still cuppy and deep in dust. Trainer Lowenstein was immensely pleased with the work of Misstep, and in commenting on it he declared that he had done all that had been asked of l.im, and was displaying improvement in each successive trial. Misstep is now ready to be set down for a speedy trial at one mile, and this will be undertaken next Sunday, when his owner, Leo J. Marks, will be on hand. George J. Longs Braybant. under the direction of Dick Brooks, was given a gallop at one mile and a quarter, and it was the first time any of the locally trained Derby colts had been asked to traverse the increased distance. With Harry Gray up, the son of Busy American and Anaebena began at the eighth post and, running easily, clipped off the following fractions: :25*5, :52"j, 1:20%, 1 :49fi and finished the route under a pull in 2:1875. The colt raced impressively and showed that he will have no trouble going the Derby route at a fast clip. Owner Long was on hand to view the work. The fastest mile of the morning was witnessed when Longridge, one of the Longridge Stable Derby eligibles, covered the distance in 1 :45%. Joe Kederis, who is scheduled to ride the colt in his Derby engagement, had the leg up on the son of Leonard HI. and Martha Lee for the first time. Kederis had been instructed to hold the colt well in hand, but despite his efforts Longridge got away from him during the middle portion of the route and covered the ground at a pace faster than had been intended. He began at the five-eighths post and went the half in :50, three-quarters in 1:17% and the mile in 1 :45%. Kederis managed to gain control of the colt in the final quarter and he finished well in hand. Bar None, the other Derby eligible of the Longridge Stable, also went a mile, which he covered in 1 :49%. He was under control all the way. stepping the half in £1% and three-quarters in 1 :191-5. Jim Everman sent A. A. Kaisers Derby hope Bonivan for a work at one mile, and the colt stepped along in a manner that was most pleasing to both his owner and trainer. Jockey Herman Ludwig, who was astride the colt, rated him nicely and at an even gait. His fractions were :2o, :30, 1:04, l:18af,, 1 :32, 1 :47. Bonivan ran like a good weight carrier and one that can go a route. Keith, the Parkview Stables Derby eligible, went out with Royal Omar and ran three-quarters in 1:20, much to the satisfaction of his trainer W. Covington. George Barnes breezed Whisk Arm three-eighths in :37. There was not much to occupy the attention of the railbirds at Douglas Park. Two Dans and Tiger Flowers were the only Derby eligibles to be galloped. The first named stepped a half mile in :51-*5, while Tiger Flowers went a similar distance in :."l1i. Georgia W., a candidate for the Kentucky Oaks, ran three-quarters in 1 :17. The ranks of the locally-trained Derby candidates received three additions this morning when Blackwood, Peter Hastings and L owagiac, a trio of Derby eligibles belonging to the Bloomfield Stable of Messrs. Briggs, Fisher and Xavin, arrived at Churchill Downs from Cumberland Park. Xashville, Tenn., where they had been in training for the past two months. The trio comprised a portion of the stable of seventeen horses, which arrived in charge of trainer Bert Wil- liams. The Derby eligibles of the stable airived in splendid condition and appear to be in an advanced state of training. They have been working well at the Xashville track, having gone three-quarters in good time, but they have not yet been let down for a speedy trip at one mile. Blackwood, regarded as the best of the three, will be the stables chief standard bearer in the Derby. This colt made an enviable record as a two-year-old, and was regarded as one of the best juveniles racing last year in the West. The other "horses of the stable to arrive were Miss Fire, Hawk-shaw, Tyrol. Clarence Le Bus and Ten Eyck, and nine fine looking two-year-olds, most of which are engaged in stakes to be run at Churchill Downs. Jockey L. Pichon. who recently signed a contract to ride for the stable, also arrived this morning. Fred Jr., which was unplaced in last years Kentucky Derby, and subsequently went amiss while being prepared for the Fair-mount Derby, is back at Douglas Park in the stable of Johnnie Ferris. This colt has not raced since his Kentucky Derby engagement, but he has finally recovered from the injury and is as sound as ever. He is now being pointed for the Clark Handicap. The horses that trainer W. Buford brought here from the south belonging to the Palmdale Stable, included Maria Xash. a winner at Xew Orleans of her three only starts. Maidens Choice, My Dan. Happy Promise, Pickup, Smollen and Dr. Streett. Al Luzader is a recent arrival from Xew Orleans with the four-year-old Xonchalant. Oraona, two-year-old filly by Omond — Simons, which recently arrived with the Southland Stable, and is entered in the Debutante Stakes, was bred by R. Coleman Miller at his Omond Place Farm, near this city. Mr. Miller also bred Southland Boy, another member of the same stable, and which scored in his two last starts at Xew Orleans.
