DERBY GALLOPS NUMEROUS » Cartago and Golden Racket in Limelight at Churchill Downs. « Dowagiac and Blackwood Gallop One Mile in 1:42%— William in Impressive Workout. ■ LOUISVILLE. Ky., April 30.— Negotiating the mile route in next to the best time for the distance recorded by any Kentucky Derby candidate in local training this spring, L. E. Lechleiters pair of Derby aspirants, Cartago and Golden Racket stepped the distance at Churchill Downs this morning in 1 :41%. The seasons record of 1 :40% was made by the Le Mar Farms sterling colt. Misstep, last Friday. It was the first time that trainer Jack Flanigan had called upon Cartago and Golden Racket for speed and the pair responded in a manner that was satisfactory to their trainer. True, they were driving for the greater part of the distance and were doing their best to run the first quarter in M% : half in :49*4. and the three-quarters in 1 :14%. After that the pair began to slacken speed to complete the mile in the time mentioned above. Both colts were tired at the end, but this was taken as a good indication by trainer Flanigan who declared that a horse had to get good and tired in his training in order to reach his best racing form. The workouts were conducted over a track that was somewhat deep near the inner rail and, coming down the home stretch, the horses had to face a strong wind. The trials of the Bloomfield Stables pair, Blackwood and Dowagiac, were impressive. They were sent one mile and. running together, they performed their task quite handily in 1 :42%, going the quarter in :24 ; half in :48 and three-quarters in 1 :14. It was the kind of work that made a favorable impression. Longridge and Bar None also were sent a mile. The former began in front and, running close to the rail, headed his stablemate all the way, finishing the distance a neck in advance. Bar None galloped on the outside, but, despite this disadvantage, ran the mile in 1 :43%. It took Longridge 1 :44 to complete the journey. Bar None worked the half in :4S% and the three-quarters in 1:13%. Longridge was timed the half in :49V£ and the three-quarters in 1 :14%. Dixie Prince, from the stable of Harned Bros., worked a steady three-quarters in 1 :16, going the quarter in :24% and the half in :49. Nick Cullop went an easy mile in 1 :54%. Reigh Count and Reigh Olga were "blown out" a fast quarter in :24%. WILLIAM PENNS GOOD WORK. At Douglas Park William Penn ran a mile in 1 :43 at an even gait. D. F. Kelly and Two Dans were galloped a half, the former going the distance in :51 and the latter in :52. Chicago, a candidate for the Clark Handicap, went a slow three-quarters in 1 :21. At Churchill Downs Sunday morning the biggest crowd of the year turned out to witness the Derby candidates in action. The workouts were over a fast track. George Barnes Whiskarm showed the best gallop of the morning. With Joe Kederis up, the fast son of Whiskaway and Army Maid negotiated the one mile route in 1 :44. Beginning at the stand, he ran the first quarter in the fast time of :23+5 and the half mile in :4S%. Kederis then took a firmer hold and the colt slackened his pace to run the three-quarters in 1 :16. He was hard held to complete the mile in 1 :44. Kederis was also astride the Longridge Stables Bar None and Longridge, but nothing pretentious was attempted by the colts. They went out separately and breezed a half mile in slow time. Dowagiac and Blackwood, from the Bloom-field Stable, were galloped together a slow half mile. Harned Bros. Dixie Prince was given an easy gallop by being sent a quarter in :2o. At Douglas Park Xewgass and Lowen-steins Derby hope, Rurik. turned in the best work of the Sabbath morning. The shapely dark gray colt, with jockey R. Yelton on his back, showed his advanced training condition when he ran seven-eighths in 1 :30%, in easy fashion. He went along with well measured strides to run the quarter in :23%, three-eighths in :35%, half in :4S% and the three-quarters in 1 :16V5. Mr. and Mrs. P. H. Flaherty, owners of Tiger Flowers, came from their home in Chicago to see their colt perform. With jockey R. Yates aboard, the colt went a creditable mile in 1:46, negotiaing the first quarter in :23%, three-eighths in :35%, half in :48%, and three-quarters in 1 :16Vs. This colt, despite the fact that he is classed only as a second rater, is working impressively and, if he continues to improve, he will be a factor in the division of three-year-old races this year. Trainer Johnnie Jones sent Alex Gordons Reproduce a slow mile in 1 :48.
