BRILLIANT MARYLAND SPORT Aberdeen Stakes Main Attraction at Havre de Grace Good As Gold Triumphs Victorian Defeats DefeatsToro Toro Sortie and Display in Slien Slienandoah andoah Purse HAVRE DE GRACE Md April 24 Good as Gold racing in the colors of Mrs W M Jeffords and ridden by E Ambrose was win ¬ ner of the Aberdeen Stakes at Havre de Grace this afternoon Outrunning her oppo ¬ nents from the start and setting her own pace Good as Gold had a margin of four lengths over Harry Payne Whitneys Swatter at the finish The latter got up in the final strides to beat J Griffiths Guilford by a nose for second place G D Wideners St Prisca was fourth fourthThe The Aberdeen Stakes which was provided as the feature of a program easily the best offered on the Maryland circuit this spring brought to the post a field of the best two yearolds in training in these parts There were eleven starters Phillip being withdrawn Swatter and Dress Ship running coupled as the Whitney entry had the call and were always favorite in the speculation Several of them were rather fractious at the bar ¬ rier especially The Kid and Dunrock and they were responsible for a delay of seven minutes When the start finally came Am ¬ brose got off in front with Good As Gold and the Jeffords filly was never headed Carrying Guilford along at a rapid pace Good As Gold began drawing away entering the stretch and at the eighth post it looked a case of all over but the shouting Good As Gold was eight lengths in front at this stage Ambrose then proceeded to take matter easy and passing the judges he wa looking bark barkPADDOCK PADDOCK DISAPPOINTS DISAPPOINTSSwatter Swatter rather slow to get going gained steadily and finished with splendid courage Paddock of which great things was ex ¬ pected performed disappointingly He was last to leave the stalls and raced far back in the early stages Sand Fiddler undefeated until today and with a record of four straight victories finished sixth The pace through ¬ out was fast the fractional time being 23i 47 and the four and a half furlongs in G4 The net value of the stake to the win ¬ ner was 9600 9600A A tremendous gathering turned out at ¬ tracted by the brilliant program Additional attractions were the Shenandoah Purse the conditions of which were framed to bring together Dixie Handicap eligibles and the Downs Purse was provided for Preakness Stakes candidates All of the eight starters in the latter race are prominent eligibles for Pimlicos big feature featureMuch Much interest was attrached to tht running of the Shenandoah Purse from the fact that Display and Victorian were making their first efforts of the season Bateau was elim ¬ inated from this race which left a field of six to start Victorian which was racing the colors of the Warm Stable for the first time was a pronounced favorite in the Shenandoah Purse PurseA A stirring finish came with the running of the twoyearold race when Alwington Dolly Campfire Maid and Fire Girl finished necks apart in the order named A field of fourteen went to the post and they were promptly dispatched to a good start Alwington Dolly beginning rapidly was soon out in front and opened up a lead of a length over Fire Girl They ran in this order to the stretch turn where Fire Girl moved up on the outside Leischman was urging the latter and she was responding gamely All through the home stretch the leaders were under punishment and at the end the first two were tiring while Fire Girl was gaining The latter fin ¬ ished fast in the last fifty yards These three beat the remainder of the field by eight lengths lengthsFire Fire Girl was claimed by J P Smith for J2500 J2500The The Glen Riddle Stable scored its first vic ¬ tory of the season when the grey colt Battle ¬ ship Gray beat a band of maidens in the third race It was the son of Man o Wars first effort of the season and he went to the post a wellplayed favorite Steve ODonnell had the mount Battleship Gray left the stall rather sluggishly but when in the clear ne opened with a rush and was soon on even terms with Coots The pair raced like a team to the stretch turn where Coots bore out some At this stage Glen Wild came through next the rail at the eighth post and joined issue with the leaders In the last six ¬ teenth Battleship Gray began drawing away and at the finish he won by a length Coots was a couple of lengths in front of the tir ¬ ing Glen Wild
