FIX IT TAKES STAKE RACE Gelded Son of Crimper First in Suffolk Claiming Stakes Tortsur Second and JTeltelian Third In Jam ¬ aica Attraction Track Slow But Improving Rapidly JAMAICA N Y April 24 Fix It a gelded son of Crimper and Ligeure that raced in Maryland won the Suffolk Claiming Stakes for Dr J P Jones at Jamacia thia afternoon and added just 3975 to his earn ¬ ings This was the stake of the Metropoli ¬ tan Jockey Club and while it was built to attract platers the class of the horses was excellent excellentPortsur Portsur another that was seasoned in Maryland raced to second place under the silks of the B S Stable and T M Cas sidys Meltelian saved third from Domina a filly that raced for Victor Emanuels Dor wood Stable StableThe The track had improved somewhat but it was still slow from recent rains The sport was entertaining though there were two of the six races that were devoted to the ju ¬ veniles venilesNine Nine started in the Suffolk Claiming Stakes and there was only a short delay at the post with the start rather a poor one the ones that filled the money positions all leaving in good fashion Fix It forced the pace and Portsur and Domina chased after him to the stretch There Domina tired and as Kelsay attempted to drive Portsur through next the inner rail Johnny McTaggart came over with Fix It closing the opening and making the victory of the gelding certain certainAt At the end Fix It was a length and a half clear while Portsur was a length before Mel ¬ telian which in turn only beat the tiring Domina by a half length for the short end of the purse purseA A race of more importance than the Suf ¬ folk except in value was the mile and seventy yards of the Calverton Handicap It resulted in a victory for Diavolo from the Wheatley Stable and it was a performance that should do real good in completing nis training for his engagement in the 2500 J Dixie Handicap of the Maryland Jockey Club which is to be decided at Pimlico next Mon ¬ day dayThe The son of Whisk Broom II gave an excel ¬ lent performance for a first out but at the end he was doing his best to beat T M Cassidys Mi Vida and the pair of them were well out before Double Pay from the Howe Stable StableDELAY DELAY AT THE POST POSTThere There was some delay at the post and it was not a good start Upset Lad winner of the Florida Derby was away so badly as to have no chance Essare on the other hand enjoyed a distinct advantage at the break leaving in full stride strideGarner Garner permitted Essare to go into a lead of three lengths before he took hold of him to rate him along in front Mi Vida left in good position and he was racing second with Spear Rock third and Diavolo following that colt The others were all more or less strung out outAt At the halfmile post Diavolo had moved up on the outside until he was in third place with Essare still showing the way and Mi Vida racing second The Wheatley colt was going so smoothly that it was apparent then he would have to be reckoned with in the stretch run runSpear Spear Rock had dropped out of the run ¬ ning and Essare had begun to shorten stride Diavolo soon moved into command but Mi Vida was hanging on with real courage and as the pair swung into the stretch it had narrowed to a twohorse race Diavolo was well clear an eighth out but in that last eighth Mi Vida was coming fast under a vigorous drive and at the end the pair were closely lapped with Diavola first by a head Four lengths farther back Double Pay fin ¬ ished fast to be an easy third over Comet which had made a determined move on the outside going to the stretch turn turnEssare Essare stopped badly at the end and It would appear that at best he is only a sprinter sprinterIrish Irish Holiday the threeyearold son of Bunting and Mrs Me which now races for William Long was winner of the opening threequarter dash 6ver some cheap platers P H Fatilconers Westovers Ibby raced TO second place by a narrow margin over B S Cutlers Ominous OminousSam Sam Hildreth continued his successes of the opening day when in the fiveeighths of the second race a dash for juveniles he sent two to the post from the Rancocas Sta ¬ ble to have them finish first and second There were Mokatam a bay son of Bud Lerner and Katrina and Wu a son of Kai Sang and Neva W They dominated all the running and finished seven lengths before Trek a starter from the Wheatley Stable Jodhpur was fourth The only other startera were Arbutus and Rayo a pair saddled by W J Spiers
