ROSE OF SHARON WIN Maiden Filly Takes Ashland Oaks in Close Finish Thistle Fyrn Is Second and Ben Machree Third in Lexingtons Fixture Turn On Wins LEXINGTON Ky April 24 Rose of Sha ¬ ron a maiden daughter of Light Brigade Rosa Mundi established herself as one of no little ability when she accounted for the renewal of the Ashland Oaks which was the stake attraction at the iocal Kentucky Association track thi afternoon The win ¬ ner owned and bred by J N Camden but racing under the colors of D E Stewart her trainer triumphed in a driving finish and by a neck over Thistle Fyrn the smart starter of George Collins C C and G Y Hieatts Ben Machree racing coupled with Florhi in the betting finished t e one mile and a six ¬ teenth in third place just a length back of Thistle Fyrn FyrnThere There followed six other of the outstanding threeyearold fillies here of which the Warm Stables Pretty Pose was fourth fourthRose Rose of Sharon ridden by C E Allen ran the distance over a fast track in 1 46 under an impost of 118 pounds and her success net ¬ ted 3GOO and a handsome trophy donated by Major T C McDowell owner of the famed Ashland Farm for which the stake is named namedAlthough Although the field was regarded as one lacking the high quality of others that have started in the fixture few renewals have re ¬ sulted in a more thrilling or keenly untested race Its decision witnessed heated dispute for the leading position at every juncture and it was not until in the final strides that the winner reached the lead leadPERFECT PERFECT 3IODEL SCORES SCORESA A field of cheap fillies and mares furnished the opening race in which Perfect Model was the winner in a driving finish with Confi ¬ dential Clarie Amour accounted for third The race was marked by crowding in the opening quarter which reduced the chances of several of the starters a particular suf ¬ ferer being Sport Dress the favorite Ap ¬ prentice White hustled the winner past Grandma G to the lead entering the stretch and continuing gamely just outstayed Con ¬ fidential fidentialTrainer Trainer Walter Taylor uncovered another juvenile of promise in the second race for which he saddled Ante Bellum for H P Headley The bay youngster outsprinted his company for the full four and onehalf fur ¬ longs and won by little more than a length over Sydney Roll Em Down was third The winner was timed in 54 just threefifths of a second slower than the track record recordProse Prose and Poetry the staunch favorite finished in fourth place going to defeat with ¬ out apparent mishap After dropping back on the turn Sydney showed improved speed through the stretch and was racing fastest in the final stages He will probably im ¬ prove on this showing showingSPARKLING SPARKLING PERFORMANCE PERFORMANCETurn Turn On making her second start in two days raced to victory over Onup Saucy Sue and five other fillies and mares in the third race As a result of being shuffled back in the run to and around the first turn Turn On was forced to race from behind and when called on in the stretch she gamely wore down Saucy Sue and Echolight and outstayed Onup to win by a neck The latter lucky to get through on the inside in the stretch after being taken back on the last turn was going with more speed at the end and might have been best Saucy Sue had no difficulty supplanting Echolight the early pacemaker after threequarters but the final test was too much for her herAt At the start Miss Torch swerved into Louisville Lou with the result that both were away in poor fashion fashionClyde Clyde Van Dusen saddled his first winner of the meeting when Narva which he trains for W C Goodloe scored over Thistle Star Macks Baby and six other fillies and mares in the fourth race a split of the first race The winner a strong favorite had the most speed from the start and after leading to the stretch drew away and won by four lengths Thistle Star always close up con ¬ tinued gamely after being bumped by Fuss and Feathers as she passed the latter enter ¬ ing the stretch and Macks Baby got up for third place
