WHITNEYS DERBY HOPES May Prove More Formidable Than Generally Expected llcgrct nml Whiskery Xot Highly Esteemed EsteemedUcforc Ucforc Their Victories Beacon llill llillHandsome Handsome Large Colt LOUISVILLE Ky April 29 It wont do to count Harry Payne Whitney out of the fiftyfifth Kentucky Derby simply because none of his quartet of eligibles were among the first class juveniles last year These colts are promising Bargello son of Bunting Miniato Beacon Hill son of the aging but still potent Broomstick Yankee Maid and Cady Hill son of Pennant Crocus CrocusNobody Nobody thought two months ahead of the race that Whitney would win the fortyfirst Derby in 1915 His only formidable eligible was Regret a filly by Broomstick from Jer ¬ sey Lightning Regret had been a crack twoyearold in 1914 but no filly had got down in front in any of the forty other Derbys and the experts were pretty well con ¬ vinced that none would ever be successful in one Nevertheless the veteran Joe Notter brought Regret home in front of Pebbles Sharpshooter and eight or ten others Nor in midMarch two years back was anyone disposed to bet and James Rowe least of all that Whiskery son of Whisk Broom II Prudery a grandson of Broomstick through his daddy would win the fiftythird Derby Lame off and on in the summer of 192G Whiskery had been declared from every threeyearold race out of which he could be withdrawn the Belmont the Realization etc to save forfeits and consigned to the second string of the Wrhitney stable which young Fred Hopkins regularly winters and trains at Benning He had shown only to justify taking a long Derby chance on him himHopkins Hopkins got Whiskery to Louisville to score handsomely under Linus McAtee over Os mand Jock Bostonian Sir Harry Hydromel etc after he had defeated Sir Harry in a Chesapeake revival at Havre de Grace and finished third to Bostonian a stable com ¬ panion and Sir Harry in the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico He had lost the Preak ¬ ness solely because Clarence Kummer com ¬ mandeered at the last minute to ride gave out before he did and couldnt rid him through the stretch as a tiring but thoroughly game horse should have been ridden Kummer had been idle more than a year and was not fit to ride rideWITIIOLDIXG WITIIOLDIXG THE STAHS STAHSFor For a number of years Rowe has been withholding the most promising of the Whit ¬ ney twoyearolds from spring and early sum ¬ mer racing to the end that they may make sound and dependable distancerunning three yearolds and fouryearolds That he thought more last year of Beacon Hill than he had of Bostonian in 1920 was indicated by the man ¬ ner in which he campaigned the two colts Bostonian got to the post in May of his first season Beacon Hill didnt start until July 31 of last year when in a dash of five and a half furlongs for twoyearold maidens at Saratoga he was beaten by Ready ReadyBeacon Beacon Hill was defeated in eight other races and is still a maiden But it wouldnt be wise to hold those failures against him He is a bigger and better looking colt today at Brookdale Farm in Monmouth County New Jersey where Rowe is always winter ¬ ing and training the main division of the Whitney stable than Sir Barton was in March 1919 and that doughty son of Star Shoot Lady Sterling broke out of the maiden class by winning the fortyfifth Derby Rowe declared several times last year that Beacon Hill was as fast a colt as anything he had trained in years He attributed his failures to an ability to adjust his gait to dashes of five and a half and six furlongs Beacon Hill is a long strider Many long striders are like that Bostonian although he won a couple of purses in 192G was one Generally such twoyearolds train on into stout dis ¬ tance running threeyearolds when they come up sound Beacon Hill is perfectly sound Also he is developing into a hand ¬ some horse horseCady Cady Hill and Bargello raced early last year because they were too full of pep to be withheld Bargello scoring once Cady Hill winning three straight in the autumn Through Pennant and Bunting Bargello is a great grandson of Peter Pan the grand ¬ dad of Black Gold the fiftieth Derby winner and greatgrandfather through Black Serv ¬ ant and Black Toney o Blue Larkspur fu ¬ ture book favorite for this years Derby Bargellos mother Minato is a daughter of Querido and Fiesole she a daughter of Fi renze and she one of the greatest mares that has raced anywhere Minato was bred in England for Whitney by Jack Joyner JoynerCady Cady Hill is of the family of Whiskery Flagstaff Flags Initiate Panoply Coro ¬ nation Overture and Honker If ever there was a mare anywhere that produced more winners of high distinction than Inaugural she a daughter of Voter Court Dress the writer cannot recall her name Cady Hill was a victim of influenza at Brookdale Farm a year ago last spring and a bit of a roarer even in the fall But the fact that he is in the fiftyfifth Derby and the coming Preak ¬ ness would appear to imply that Rowe is sure he will do well this year
