farther back Poit sur raced into fourth place placeMcAtee McAtee had Gregory away fast and he was the one to force the pace though he never drew away from the others Talky and Mel ¬ telian were close after the son of Cudgel in the early racing and Rayo was also close up until he was shut off and knocked out of contention Portsur had worked his way into third place early in the running but he was in rather close quarters and Loyola on the extreme outside showed a little flash of speed Talky was all through before the stretch was reached but Meltelian was hang ¬ ing on gamely and Portsur was also close after the leaders leadersAt At the head of the stretch there was a general closing up and Play Ball came into the picture There Portsur was in close quarters while Meltelian was going so well that he looked the winner Then right at the end the McAtee skill told the tale and he kept Gregory going to have him winner by a nose Meltelian was only a head before Play Ball and Portsur was four lengths back After the running S Cooper who rode Port ¬ sur lodged a claim of foul against McAtee but the protest was not allowed allowedW W R Coes Sweep Out proved herself a good filly when she was the winner of the Cumberland Claiming Handicap She was badly knocked about all through the running but gamely battled her way through in the stretch to be first home before Filemaker from the Belair Stud Stable and Fator bumped London Rock into third place right at the end Peter Peter had no chance at the start but the others left in good alignment with Zest and Contemplate the ones to race into the lead They were soon two lengths clear and Hildreth was next in order Sweep Out Continued on seventeenth page CLOSE FINISH AT JAMAICA Continued from first page was away so slowly that only Peter Peter was back of her Contemplate had Zest headed before the stretch was reached but that cost an effort and in the run home there was a general closing up and Sweep Out closing a big gap the inside and knocked Contem ¬ plate completely off his stride as he went past pastThreeyearold Threeyearold maidens started in the threequarters race run as the fifth and Mc ¬ Atee rode his second winner of the day when he brought the Arden Farm Stables Sun Eclipse home before Kildare from the New tondale Stable with W R Coes Irish just nosing out Turf Writer for third And in this race as in the Gregory victory there were demands on the McAtee skill to bring colt going when defeat seemed inevitable inevitableJ J P Jones Florazetta was rather an easy winner of the opening fiveeighths race which was for twoyearold fillies of the plater division Another condition of the race was that the fillies to be ridden by boys that had not ridden fifteen winners winnersThe The start was a good one and Florazetta quickly went into command and was at no time seriously threatened Grey Abbess raced on the outside going to the stretch turn to find her way into second place while Scorn ¬ ful while racing forwardly lost any chance she may have had by bearing out badly in the stretch stretchGrey Grey Abbess had little trouble in saving second place and W T Andersons Cindy Lou raced into third place because Scornful the only other starter lost so much ground in the stretch stretchAbout About as bad a lot of horses as ever met in Xew York went to the post for the mile and seventy yards of Eclipse were the ones to set the pace but they were soon joined by Kildare and both of them went along closely lapped with Sun Eclipse on the inside Mc ¬ Atee having crossed over from an outside position shortly after the start Turning for home Kildare was showing the way but Mc ¬ Atee still had his inside berth and he was In close attendance Chester was beginning to tire and both Irish and Turf Writer were racing resolutely It was a fight all the way home and McAtee crossed the finish with Sun Eclipse a half length to the good with Kildare three lengths before Irish which in turn just nosed out Turf Writer WriterAt At the end of the card there was a split of the second a mile and seventy yards for just about the worst horses in training Six went to the post and G C Winfreys old
