TRIUMPHS BY A NOSE Victorian Finishes Second and Veteran Display Third Net Value of Rich Pimlico Race is 26700 Brilliant Inau ¬ gural at Hilltop Track PIMLICO Md April 29 Coming from be ¬ hind in the stretch and finishing with a fino burst of speed the Wheatley Stables Diavolo got up in the final strides to annex the rich Dixie Stakes at Pimlico this afternoon when he beat the Warm Stables Victorian by a nose Five lengths back came Walter J Sal ¬ mons Display a neck in front of A C Schwartz Sortie SortieThe The Dixie Handicap was the big attraction provided by the Maryland Jockey Club of the opening of its twelveday spring meeting at Pimlico It was run as the fourth race and attracted a field of eighteen Victorian was the public choice and had strong sup ¬ port It was a cumbersome field and they were at the post four minutes before starter Milton caught them in line and dispatched them in a good start Victorian had the inside post position and Workman was forced to hustle the big son of Whisk Broom II along to hold his position Setting a fast pace he drew away into a two lengths lead on the first turn and he increased his ad ¬ vantage to four lengths at the halfmile post Workman then took his mount under slight restraint giving him a breathing spell Near the stretch he again drew away and was four lengths in front at the head of the straightaway straightawayMAIBEXS MAIBEXS GOOD RIDE RIDEIn In the meantime Diavolo on which Maiben rode a good race was gradually improving his position positionSeventh Seventh at the first turn he was fifth at the half post and third at the eighth post Responding gamely under punishment Da volo gradually wore the tiring Victorian down to get up in the final strides It was a close finish and it took the official placing to decide the winner winnerAs As the race was run Victorians perform ¬ ance was much the best Conceding weight to everything in the race but PeteeWrack Victorian set all of the pace a great handi ¬ cap over a distance of ground and it was only natural that he should tire at the end Display and Sortie came from a long way back both following along with the tail enders in the early stages and when they made their run they moved up on the out ¬ side The winner ran the mile and three sixteenths in 200 The fractional time was 23 47 112 139 The gross value of the stake was 36125 the winners portion was 27600 27600It It was a brilliant opening of what promises to be a high class meeting The club house contingent turned out en masse The Hunt Club set being especially prominent in the large gathering which filled the boxes and club house balconies For the first time this spring in Maryland there was two races for twoyearolds on the program and the win ¬ ners of both of these races were saddled by Elmer Trueman TruemanSTAGING STAGING COMEBACK COMEBACKAlbert Albert Johnson who is staging a come ¬ back rode in both of these races when he sported the silks of the Messrs John A Morris on St James in the first race In the third race he rode A H Morris Sweet Sentiment and finished third thirdAfter After several disappointments Wild Apple finally made good for the R W Carter Stable when she was up in the final strides to beat J E Davis Radha in the first race Radha ridden by R Workman began quickly set a rapid pace saved ground on the turn and led by a comfortable margin to the stretch when she began to tire Wild Apple began better than usual and laid in a contending position all the way He hung on with splendid courage under punishment and outgamed the filly at the end Vacant from the Nevada Stock Farm Stable was third beaten off three lengths and Willis Sharpe Kilmers Lady Buyer was fourth A number of the starters in this race were mak ¬ ing their maiden efforts Some were green at the barrier which probably accounted for the poor start startCrossco Crossco made her field look cheap in tho running of the second race There were four starters and Crossco was a heavily played favorite at oddson Halbert rode her in a very confident manner In the first half mile Crossco raced under restraint On the turn out of the back stretch when re ¬ leased she bounded to the front only to bo again taken in hand at the threeeighths post i Continued on eleventh page
