EQUALS BAINBRIDGE MARK Backbone, Carrying 120 Pounds, Runs Fine Race to Win Plain Dealer Handicap. CLEVELAND. Ohio, June 15.— Backbone registered his third consecutive victory for Fowlie and Shea, when he captured the Cleveland Plain Dealer Handicap, fifth and principal attraction of the half-holiday card at Bainhridge Park this afternoon. With 120 pounds, up he ran the six furlongs in 1 :12-/3, equaling the track record. The race was worth ,000 net to the winner. R J. Moores disposed of the tiring John Howe for the the minor rewards. . Jockey Tommy Luther restrained Backbone behind the pace of Jack Howe and Atenas until reaching the turn for home, then moved up fast. He found an opening next the inner rail midway of the stretch and when let down drew away to win with considerable to spare Clearance came fast on the outside through the stretch and easily disposed of the tiring Jack Howe for tho second honors. A heavy shower fell following the running of the feature offering, which drove the capacity crowd to shelter. It failed to injure the going, however. An excellent card was provided and the racing was spirited. Deviner, owned by M. J. Daly. Jr., kept his record here a perfect one, with two successive victories, when he accounted for the first race today, winning the three-quarters dash in easy fashion from Mrs. L. M. Holmes Jim Bridger, and J. M. Hizars Nondaga. All of the three have been consistent performers at this meeting. Nondaga threatened to make it his third victory, when he assumed the lead at the head of the stretch, but he faltered in the drive home, and Deviner, coming up fast on the outside, won going away. Jim Bridger improved his position gradually and finished with courage. The second race, also at a distance of three-quarters of a mile, went to J. M. Coopers aged gelding Brunswick, which proved a better finisher than Lew Black. The latter was fast throughout and was beaton only when Brunswick refused to be denied in the closing strides. Wega closed fast on the inside to get third. L. W. Johnsons Mosque, which had been unable to get in the money in three races here, captured the third race, which was at one mile and seventy yards. Going in much improved form, he took command in the stretch and won with some to spare after shaking off Denny Cooney, which had shown good speed throughout. Kajaba finished strong on the outside and got third place in a drive with Courier. Mrs. Foster, belonging to C. T. Worthing-ton, proved to be another two-time winner in the running of the fourth race, at five-eighths of a mile, for two-year-olds. She showed good speed from the beginning and was never in danger, although Leila A. came fast, racing on the outside, to get second place. Roll em Down also finished fast after being shuffled back soon after the start. ♦
