Of the other starters in this race, it was J. W. Marchbanks filly Justina which proved the most formidable opponent, and which, ridden bv A. Pendergrass. finished in second place. It developed strictly into a contest between the Collins and Marchbank representatives. The two others. W. M. The bulk of the public support in the •take race was bestowed on Justina. and Under the Rose, the filly from the Keeneland Stud, which was making her first appearance here. In fact, there was exactly-equal backing shown for both these fillies. Thistle Ann ruled second choice in the betting. IDEAL RACING CONDITIONS. Ideal weather conditions prevailed for the ■port here this afternoon and one of the largest crowds to attend at this meeting turned out. The temperature was mounting steadily as the afternoon wore along, the heat reaching almost a torrid degree. The four-year-old filly Patsy H.. racing in her best form, upset calculations considerably and made a runaway affair of the opening race, over three-quarters, in which she defeated Altura. the favorite, Cherokee Maid, and the six other starters. Ridden by the apprentice. V. Smith. Patsy H. raced away Into a long lead right after the start and, holding on much better than usual, won all the way. Altura was always in close pursuit and was steadily gaining, but though offering a game challength in the stretch, was not good enough and failed to do better than save second place. Cherokee Maid and Blue Blood were factors to the stretch, where In the final eighth Blue Blood tired, enabling Cherokee Maid to get up for third place. Silver Cord from the Keeneland Stud Stable, making his first start of the meeting, made good in the second race with a victory scored over a good band of maiden two-year-olds that matched strides over five and a half furlongs. This grey son of Stefan the Grep.t and Alice Blue C.own appeared to be one of the best youngsters that has appeared at the meeting and at all stages of the race was easily best, leading from start to finish. It was with consummate ease that Silver Cord held Harold Ormont safe to the stretch turn, raced the latter into defeat and thru drew away into a big lead and the finish found him being eased up by his rider. nmun first success. Jockey L. Trimble was astride the winner, riding for his new employer. J. O. Keene, and It was Trimbles first victory here. On the occasion of his graduation into the winning class. Silver Cord was the favorite and received much backing in this race. Prince-s Isabel was the one to race to second place, but only managed to secure that place by a nose over the fast finishing Sam Pass. Essie, a winner on the occasion of her last start here, came back this afternoon to win the purse in the third race and score her second straight win. Bobbinalong gamely outstayed Sweepstakes to earn second place. Sweepstakes, outpaced early, came with a late challenge on the outside in the Basl sixteenth and, passing tiring horses, ran fastest of all and finished third, beaten by a neck by Bobbinalong. Essie managed to beat Bobbinalong by one length. Sweepstakes was the favorite. The Runt, another of the starters, had considerable backing, but lie was unable to keep pace with the leaders, and could never improve over fourth pla e. Broomoney set the pace in this race to the streteh, closely followed by Essie. After making the last turn, Broomoney tired badly and was done. It was then that Essie slowly took the lead, which she retained thereafter. The Buseh Handicap, one mile and a sixteenth, for which there were five starters, proved an opportunity for the Audley Farm Stables Chanecllor, ridden by R. Finnerty, to earn his first purse of the meeting. Scoring a well deserved, though somewhat hollow victory. Chancellor defeated some good ones, including Wildale. which raced to second place; Bather, which landed third, and the two others that started, Lincoln Plaut and Sea Rocket. Wildale was the favorite in this aecondary attraction. Wildale took the command from Bather and then drew away into a good lead. Chancellor, saving ground on the inside, pursued Wild ale closely to the stretch turn and then, moving up with a strong challenge, slowly worked his way up to tie- leader and, when Wildale began bearing out bally and tiring in the run home, it enabled Chancellor to slowly move past the early leader into the lead and, at the end, was gradually drawing clear. j
