THRILLING STRETCH DRIVE Happy Scot Beaten for Second Time in Five Starts Ua Triumphs In Spring Juvenile Stakes at Pimlico Eider Vins Steeple ¬ chase Race BALTIMORE Md May 8 Happy Scot the good son of Scotch Broom whom race ¬ goers were beginning to look upon as invin ¬ cible suffered his second defeat in his last five starts when he was beaten at Pimlico this afternoon in the Spring Juvenile Stakes by James N Croftons Up a colt he pur ¬ chased a few weeks back from Cary T Gray son Up was soundly beaten by Happy Scot the last time the pair met and once before by Gigantic In both races Up had considerable bad luck especially in the Gigantic race in which he was buffeted about He came out of that race with several cuts cutsToday Today Up had the luck with him Leaving the post from the inside position he was away in front and Coltiletti made the most of his advantage Setting a fast pace he ran the first quarter in 224fc Happy Scot Avhich did not leave with his usual burst of speed was racing along with Up half a length back of the latter On the turn for home they drew away from the others open ¬ ing up a gap of five lengths At the furlong post Happy Scot was at Ups saddle skirts Both riders were driving in desperate fashion and Coltilelti was bearing over and laying on Happy Scot He was outriding J Eaby Despite this Happy Scot was gradually wear ¬ ing the leader down but he just failed to make it and was beaten by the smallest of margins Gigantic finished third beaten eight lengths for second place placeThe The Glenmore Steeplechase which was run as the second race brought a field of eight to the post Six of them finished the course and the Eastland Farms furnished the win ¬ ner in the imported horse Eider which beat P J Buchanans Author by a couple of lengths John Bosley Jrs Dragon de Vertu finished third another length back and then followed J P McGoverns My Care Eiders victory Avas rather a lucky one and had My Care not made a bad landing at the last jump he Avould have galloped home an easy winner My Care had the others beaten at the last jump and still had a lead of a couple of lengths In landing he made a mistake and Smoot all but fell off As a matter of fact he was out of the saddle but scrambled back The mishap put him out of the running and Eider then passed him to get the purse At the first jump Lizard fell and Royal Town tumbled over him A William who had the mount on the latter was badly injured and was rushed to the South Baltimore General Hospital Watkins escaped Avith a sprained ankle and Smoot who rode My Care sprained his Avrist Avlfen he snatched the gelding up to keep from going down Author was claimed out of the race by T O Moore for 4500 4500Miss Miss Dinwiddie the Campfire filly Mrs Heighe purchased from Woods Garth during the Havre de Grace meeting made good in handsome fashion this afternoon Avhen she scored a runaway victory in the opening race This Avas over four and a half furlongs for twoyearolds and under claiming conditions Miss Dinwiddie Avas ridden by Steve ODon nell began first and setting the pace had a lead of one length over the G D Widener filly Shield at the end This pair raced one two all the Avay Dunlins Lad which fin ¬ ished third came from behind in the stretch to beat the tiring Roly Poly and Noisy Miss for the short end of the purse purseThe The fourth race brought out one of the cheapest fields of platers that haAe gone to the post in Maryland this spring The win ¬ ner came from the Alwington Stable whoso Alwington Dolly scored a driving victory Avhen she beat H G Bedwells Fair Bob by a neck Mrs I L Hollands Elizabeth Bolla Avas third another head back Alwington Dolly beginning rapidly led from the rise of the barrier and was never headed Fair Bob also began Avell In the early stages Norma Jean Avas the one to furnish conten ¬ tion but after going three furlongs she had enough of it and dropped back Cannon then made his challenge Avith Fair Bob and in the stretch the Bedwell racer finished Avitli good courage At the end however Eliza ¬ beth Bolla Avas going much the strongest of the first three Quillen took her to the outside at the head of the stretch and Avhen he Avent to a drive his mount responded In the last sixteenth she Avas gaining at every stride and had the distance been fifty yards further Elizabeth Bolla would have beaten both Alwington Dolly and Fair Bob Pete Walls won a race for Max Hirsch with Battler this afternoon Avhen he beat A H Morris Fallacious by a head in the third race Walls got Battler aAvay with the lead ¬ ers Avhen the start came Avhile Fallacious began in the middle of the bunch Making1 the most of his advantage Walls sent Bat ¬ tler to the front and in the early stages raced Kitty Marie into submission When the latter quit Bejshak moved up Avith Fallacious and at the furlong post was within half a length of Battler A sixteenth from home it looked as if Battler Avas beaten Walls evidently did not think so for he Avent to the Avhip and putting up one of the strongest finishes he lias displayed in some time succeeded in making Battler last long enough to win by a head
