PROSPECTS BRILLIANT All Indications Point to Great Churchill Downs Opening Scores of Visitors at Historic HistoricCourse Course See Tannery and Kil Kilkerry kerry in Impressive Works LOUISVILLE Ky May 8 The pictur ¬ esque and famed home of the Kentucky Derby one of the worlds greatest races and Americas most coveted fixture is ready for its fiftysixth annual spring meeting of nineteen days opening Saturday SaturdayToday Today glorious for weather found the warm rays of a summer sun emphasizing the color and beauty of the plant and grounds which never looked finer Then too the favorable weather permitted a speeding up of work on numerous improvements only a few of which will not be completed before the opening and it was not until dusk that the wide and varied activities ceased ceasedAs As a result of superb training conditions during the past four weeks an overwhelm ¬ ing percentage of the hundreds of thor ¬ oughbreds assembled for the meeting are in excellent condition This assures the finest of sport in return for an interest in the impending season that promises even greater importance than this farheralded course has known knownVisitors Visitors are more numerous than ever before and the presence of nlany hundreds of them during the training period this morning made for a scene not unlike actual racing hours It was a particularly impor ¬ tant session of training with a goodly num ¬ ber of Kentucky Derby candidates and some of the likely starters for Saturdays renewal of the 10000 added Clark Handicap for threeyearolds and over in action actionCYXOSIXE CYXOSIXE OF AIL EYES EYESTannery Tannery Edward F Prichards crack son of Ballot and one of the favorites for the 50 000 added fixture coming up on May 17 had his first trial over the Derby battle ¬ ground Needless to say the rangy chest ¬ nut came through with colors flying and with those who did not witness his Lexing ¬ ton performances made a fine impression when lie breezed a mile over the main track in 14216 Jockey Willie Garner his Derby pilot had the mount and breaking him at the stand sent him the first quarter in 25Ys half mile in 50 and threequarters in 115 115The The effort did not appreciably tire him and vividly reflected his superb condition conditionConsiderable Considerable interest in W T Waggoner Sons Kilkerry son of Black Toney and Killanna was aroused when he traversed the one mile and an eighth in 153 well in hand Kilkerry has come to be regarded as one of the most dangerous of the out ¬ siders in the Derby field and his brilliant trial bolstered that confidence Ridden by Tommy May he went into his distance workout from the mile chute He was at the end of a quarter in 23 went to the half in 4873 and after completing the threequarters in 114 did the mile in 140 Unsound he withstood the drill in satisfactory fashion and trainer Dick Ves ¬ tal is hopeful of getting him to the Derby up to his best performance performanceBusy Busy the candidate of J B Respess had an easy time running a mile in 144 the quarter in 24 half mile in 49 and three quarters in 115 Trainer Art Goldblatt reports this colt much improved since his transfer from Lexington and there is a chance that he will be in the Derby field fieldMaudlin Maudlin Derby eligible of the Le Mar Stock Farm and the older Canaan ran liveeighths in 102 handily and less am ¬ bitious work engaged others among the 150 Derby nominees on the grounds groundsI3ir I3ir ESSIVE GALLOPS GALLOPSSuch Such older candidates for the Clark Han ¬ dicap as Stars and Burs Blackwood Lady Broadcast and Martie Flynn were seen in impressive rehearsals The former breezed threequarters in 1 15 while Blackwood went a mile in 143 handily and Martie Flynn in company with T S Jordan and Mc Gonigle went fiveeighths in 101 handily Lady Broadcast after being tiptoed five eighths in 100 eased up threequarters in 115 Dan 115Dan Morris vanned eleven from Lexing ¬ ton and J O Keene with ten and H Cava naugh with twelve arrived from the same point Cavanaugh reported an attack of in ¬ digestion suffered by the Oaks candidate Manta forced her temporary retirement She was sent to the faim of Brownell Combs her owner ownerOn On Sunday S M Henderson will be due here from Pimlico with Woodcraft which will assist Gallant Knight in carrying the Audley Farm colors of B B Jones in the Kentucky Derby Lilla Belle Oaks hopeful Bobashela and eight others From Pimlico Henderson is shipping thirteen of the Aud ¬ ley twoyearolds to Washington Park Edward Haughton sent Mrs Payne Whit ¬ neys juvenile fitly Greentree to her owners farm near Lexington
