Handicap had a net value of 3725 to the winner and when Melvin Knight brought Maya home the winner he completed a double having scored with Spanish Jack in the opening race The weather was again uncomfortably warm The skies were over ¬ cast and rain threatened all afternoon but the crowd was a large one and there was no lack of interest in the program of seven races that was offered offeredNo No time was lost at the barrier in the Spring Handicap the seven starters leaving together Maya and Bud Broom were show ¬ ing the way to the others while Sarazen II began a bit slowly and it cost him some ¬ thing for when McAtee had him in full stride he was forced to go to the outside to find racing room Knight showed skill in rating Maya in the early stages and was content to stay with Best Man which had supplanted Bud Broom in second place Cap ¬ ture was rushed up on the inside until she was close after the leaders and racing in good fashion fashionIt It was not until on the stretch turn that Knight really asked Maya for his best and the son of Friar Rock drew away rapidly to make the victory certain He continued to increase his lead until he was past the line winner by five lengths outside and was just a nose short of catching the filly Bud Broom was closely lapped on the son of High Time and then followed Best Man Maybe and Chalice in the order named namedj j J F Byers Son o Battle came back to his good form in the Malvcrne Handicap when he was an easy winner over Houssain from the Rancocas Stable Third place fell to the Fair Stables Imperial Air which was endeavoring to give away considerable weight when handicapped at 114 pounds poundsHoussain Houssain forced the pace Imperial Air followed while Maiben was rating Son o Battle back of the pair and well within strik ¬ ing distance There was little change in the running positions through the back stretch but it was apparent at the half mile that Son o Battle had plenty in reserve as he galloped along back of the leaders Kildare was running a dull race and was utterly un ¬ able to improve his position though showing the way to Dunlins Son and Mint Sauce SauceHoussain Houssain and Imperial Air both headed Son o Battle into the stretch but it was only because Maiben had delayed his move with the winner He finally shook up the son of Man o War and in a dozen strides he was past and finished two lengths clear at the end endSixteen Sixteen cheap ones started in the opening race and L M Shapofffurnished the winner in Spanish Jack He led home Morpat from the Pauline Stable with William Ziegler Jrs Rayo saving third The start was a good one and Rubberneck was first to show with Lord Britain second and Rentiva close after the pair of them Spanish Jack was in the first division while Letalone was a bit unfortunate when he began slowly from an outside position positionAfter After leaving the back stretch Spanish Jack made his move outside of Rubberneck and three furlongs from the finish he was in front There was a general closing up of the others but Rubberneck held second and was still in that position as he turned into the stretch Spanish Jack had come away to a lead of two lengths and Morpat had moved into the contention and was closely lapped on Rubberneck and was just showing the way to Lord Britain which was beginning to show signs of tiring In the final furlong Spanish Jack was tiring but Knight kept him going long enough to be winner by a length Mor ¬ pat had outfinished the others to save second place by a length and Rayo was third thirdThreeyearold Threeyearold maiden fillies started in the second sixfurlong race of the day and it resulted in one of the best finishes of the afternoon when W R Coes Keep On under a good ride by Laverne Fator got up to win over Memories Dear a filly re ¬ cently claimed by W N Adrians It was really a twohorse race for Marshall Fields Escutcheon which was third was well back of the first two twoFrom From a good start Memories Dear was the one to set the pace Keep On was in second place and Fator was content to rate the daughter of Friar Rock back of the leaders On the turn out of the back stretch Kelsay moved up with Trysail until he finally had her third to Memories Dear and Keep On which were still showing the way Escutcheon had dropped back slightly and Sportress was having some trouble keep ¬ ing step stepIn In the stretch Memories Dear hung on exceedingly well when Fator made his move with Keep On and the result was that the pair of them quickly drew away from the others Trysail was doing her best but a furlong out was through Right to the end Fator had to fight it out but it was a successful battle when he had Keep On over the line winner in the final strides Memories Dear was five lengths before Escutcheon which had beaten the tired Try ¬ sail by six lengths for third thirdA A J Goldsborough sent a winner to the post when he saddled Crushed Stone for Charles H Thieriot in the fifth race which was for maiden juveniles Flamma racing for Mrs Louise Viau took second place with Benjamin Blocks Moryoung a daugh ¬ ter of Morvich saving third from General Toy which bore the silks of the Eastland pressed by Flamma always had a slight advantage over the filly to be win ¬ ner by threequarters of a length Flamma was two lengths before Moryoung which had saved ground in the stretch while Gen ¬ eral Toy after threatening until the stretch was reached failed badly in the final fur ¬ long longJack Jack Biener proved best of the cheap band that went to the post in the sixth race and setting the pace he was at po time seri ¬ ously threatened to win with something to spare Trek from the Wheatley stable proved better than the others and finished well to take second place while J Goffs Eager Play was third before Vimont VimontThere There was some delay in bring the horses out Eager Play had to be plated in the paddock when it was found that one plate had become twisted
