Misstep Victorious by a Nose Thrilling Finish in Washington Park ParkHandicap Handicap Feature of Inaugural Brown Wisdom Fails by Inches to Catch Le Mar MarStock Stock Farm Stable Star My Dandy Finishes FinishesThird Third in Spectacular Race HOMEWOOD 111 May 2G Misstep Le Mar Stables gallant son of Upset and Brown Wisdom offspring of Brown Prince II staged a great battle in the Wash ¬ ington Park Handicap opening day feature at the beautiful Homewood course and the former lasted to get the verdict at the end My Dandy stable companion of Brown Wisdom finished third while Martie Flynn was fourth A field of twelve went to the post Both Misstep and Brown Wisdom were off slowly with the for ¬ mer having slightly the worst of positions in the initial quarter but both charged fast in the stretch run and it is probable that Brown Wisdom was the better horse today When the start was effected after a short delay Jack Howe went to the front closely followed by My Dandy and Camp Boss and it was not long before the latter displaying extreme early speed showed in front The son of Campfire much to the surprise of all continued to lead around the far turn and into the stretch with My Dandy Morsel and Pansy Walker as his closest competitors competitorsMeanwhile Meanwhile Misstep had been gaining grad ¬ ually and was in a contending position but Brown Wisdom was still in the ruck In the run home the speedy early pace began to tell on Camp Boss and at midstretch he fal ¬ tered and My Dandy took command But not for long Misstep running with lengthy strides quickly assumed the forward position and seventy yards from the finish appeared all over the winner but Jockey Shropshire was evidently the least bit too confident and almost tossed the race away as Brown JVis dom under hard riding by Parmalee rushed down the outside and a few yards past the finish was a good length in front Had Par ¬ malee made his move earlier the decision might have been reversed reversedThe The race which was at six furlongs was the first of the rich stakes to be decided at Washington Park this season and this after ¬ noons stellar attraction was worth G140 to the winner The time was 112 112IMMENSE IMMENSE CROWD PRESENT PRESENTIf If the crowd that attended the opening days racing is taken as a criterion Washing ¬ ton Park is in for a banner meeting Fully 1800T people including many society leaders from Chicago and suburbs were present and the majority were loud in their praise of the program that had been scheduled for open ¬ ing day Most of the boxes were filled and enthusiasm was at fever pitch as the races were being run Despite the fact that 1930 is predicted as a poor year from a financial standpoint the mutuel handle at Washington Park for the first four races this afternoon did not prove the point The money that passed through the machines in the early races today exceeded that of last season by more than 25000 and is proof that regard ¬ less of all other conditions Chicagoans will show their sporting spirit when the thorough ¬ breds perform performThe The track was fast but the weather was unseasonable unseasonableThe The public got off on the right foot when It installed Supreme Sweet an oddson choice in the opening race The daughter of High Time was easily best and jockey Leg non put up a confident ride He was con ¬ tent to permit Big Sweep to hold a short lead for a quarter but when the far turn was reached went to the front and led to the finish to win by four lengths e sing up Big Sweep was always second best and Nora D raced to third place Nora D acted badly at the barrier and delayed the start for six minutes but the field was off in perfect line lineJockey Jockey Paul Neal by energetic riding got Belle Rive a daughter of Flittergold up in time to win the second race from the favorite Black Flyer The latter was supported with confidence by the majority and gave a good account of himself by racing close to the leader and taking command in the stretch but when the final drive came he could not resist the finishing speed of the winner and was forced into second place Tyrol fin ¬ ished in game fashion to be third The Okah loomed up dangerously on the stretch turn but jockey May evidently lost control of the heavy headed animal on the turn and the colt raced to the outside fence fenceThe The Blue Bells Purse an allowance race for twoyearold fillies held the third place on the program and the Keeneland Stud provided the winner in their filly In Haste The youngster was ridden by jockey W Continued on twentieth page MISSTEP WINS INAUGURAL Continued from first page Lennie and ran a good race to take the decision decisionBobashela Bobashela which was withdrawn irom the Washington Park Handicap was a starter in the Western Avenue Purse which was run as the fifth race and proved an easy winner The race was over one mile and Bobashela an oddson choice was away well In the long backstretch run lie opened up a long lead and though the others sought to catch him in the run home jockey Le Blanco was not forced to punish the animal and he got to the finish two lengths in front of the others Devon got up in time to take second money from Canaan
