LONGPRICED WINNER Netie Pebbles Outstanding Sur prise of Louisville Program Insco Son of Sir Gallahad III IIIMakes Makes Auspicious Debut in inRacing Racing Numerous Upsets LOUISVILLE Ky May 20 The most or ¬ dinary program of the meeting made up this afternoons offering for the opening of the final week of the Churchill Downs meeting but racing conditions were ideal and an en ¬ thusiastic crowd of about average propor ¬ tions turned out Large fields started in most of the races and close finishes added flavor to the sport provided by the ordi ¬ nary performers performersThe The fifth race was productive of one of the outstanding upsets when the Gorham Brothers lightly backed Netie Pebbles lasted to nose out Estin with Percentage third Apprentice Land sent the winner around Princess Zelda after following the latters pace to the stretch and while Netie Peb ¬ bles opened up a clear advantage the fast finishing Estin just failed to wear her down In the final eighth Estin came through in game fashion and Land was forced to the utmost to keep the winner going well enough to earn the verdict As the leaders hooked up in the spirited duel Percentage a vic ¬ tim of a poor ride raced from far back with a rush in the final quarter and over ¬ hauled three opponents to take third place at the end endSOUTHLAND SOUTHLAND BOY SCORES r rWith With but one exception the race for maid ¬ en juvenile colts and geldings which came up as the second claiming conditions pre ¬ vailed and without exception the more infe ¬ rior grade platers had their opportunity After fields of fifteen sported silks in each of the opening three races the lone one of small proportions came out for the fourth race and its decision was over one and one sixteenth miles and commanded the keenest interest Like a majority of the races it resulted in a surprise when Mrs F P Letel liers Southland Boy proved winner He got away with honors by a short length over Maidens Choice while Royal Son led the four others othersMarys Marys Toy racing in the colors of Mrs A Goldblatt easily defeated Orator Our Own and twelve others from among the cheaper grade older sprinters in the opening race for which Nevermore which finished in fifth place was favorite Under a good ride by W Cooler the winner after racing in close quarters for more than threeeighths sprinted to the front on the outside entering the stretch and pulling away won without much effort In the final quarter Orator and Our Own finished resolutely with the latter slowly giving way to the former in the final eighth Poor racing luck added to Nevermores task and his failure to find room on the turn kept him so far back that his rush in the stretch was no menace to the leaders leadersGREAT GREAT SPEED DISPLAY DISPLAYInsco Insco a son of Sir Gallahad III among the costly twoyearolds GrifTm Watkins Il ¬ linois patron has here made an auspicious debut when he raced fiveeighths in the Pa ducah Purse in 59 the fastest time of the meeting This display of speed returned him an easy winner with Portcodine second and Magic Flute third The race for maiden colts and geldings attracted a dozen more and Jimmie L one of that number came to grief when he fell at the staVt of the turn Showing turnShowing fine speed from the start the winner never left the result in doubt and dominated by the commanding margin of five lengths all through the stretch Here Port ¬ codine which experienced trouble during the early stages rade his way into second place and gamely outstayed Magic Flute in a bitter tussle for that portion of the purse At the end they were but a head apart The apartThe first field horse in several days raced down in front when Roscoe Gooses Miss Marnie ridden by J Chirch outsprinted four ¬ teen others for the entire six and one half furlongs in the third race She won by a half length as Betty Ann One Long Hop the latter also a field horse and a half dozen others piled in behind in very close alignment with Betty Ann getting second place and third going to One Long Hop J Chirch had the mount on the winner Bar Sinister the favorite after beginning slowly encountered no success in her quest of rac ¬ ing room with the result that she failed to enter contention at any stage
