THREE START IN HANDICAP Sortie Easily Outruns Sun Edwin and Grey Coat Salvator Handicap Main Attraction at Bel Belnion nion t Tark Cold Raw AVeatHcr AVeatHcrCuts Cuts Attendance NEW YORK N Y May 26 Sortie from tlie stable of A C Schwartz raced to his first triumph of the year in the Salvator Handicap the feature attraction at Belmont Park this afternoon The fiveyearold son of On Watch and Kippy had only the Arden Farms Sun Edwin and Samuel Ross Grey Coat to beat over the one mile and a furlong route as scratches had reduced the field fieldA A small crowd attended as cold raw weather made overcoats necessary The scratches which included Diavolo were made because of the dampness of the track trackThe The feature was slowly run with Sun Edwin setting the pace until the stretch was reached where Pete Walls permitted Sortie which previously had been under restraint to go to the front The Schwartz horse had no trouble outrunning Sun Edwin and was under restraint at the end to win by two lengths Grey Coat acted sore going to the post and was never a factor racing well back and finishing six lengths back of Sun Edwin The time for the distance was 154 154Marshall Marshall Field completed a double when Perkins ridden by McKechnie accounted for the final race of the day defeating Pennant Lass with Enduring third The winner came outside the leader Pennant Lass entering the stretch and then drew away Enduring held on well to be third Mad Hattie and Battling On met with severe interference on the far turn and were knocked out of contention contentionChosa Chosa a winter campaigner during the Havana season accounted for the first race of the day for her breeder Marshall Field in a hard drive over Marvella from the New tondale stable Traitor from the California Stable was third thirdThe The Brookmeade Stables Friar McGee was an easy winner of the steeplechase after casualties had accounted for half of the field of fifteen mostly green jumpers Going two miles Friar McGee took the jumps fault ¬ lessly and Jeffcott was able to keep him clear of most of the falls and trouble that ensued during the running The Log Cabin Stables Omar Romar was second with the Eastland Farm Stables Oakland third The horses that fell during the running were Mr Jingo Fair Enough Golden Gorse Mirage and Cardigan while Crows Nest lost his rider and Pink Lily was pulled up upEnid Enid a daughter of Rocfeminister and Torque which races for the division of the Audley Stable which Bob Smith has here was winner of the Flying Fairy Purse for threeyearold fillies At the finish Enid under J Manns riding was showing the way to R Hyams Flossine while H C Phipps Nicotine was third thirdA A nose finish resulted in the fifth race of the day John Mill which races for the Greentree Stable scored over Jubilate from the Brookmeade Stable The winner was rid ¬ den by Workman Jubilate stumbled at the start and went to his knees recovered quickly and moved into contention with a rush Rac ¬ ing gamely on the outside he swerved slightly in the final furlong towards the in ¬ side where John Mill was moving along fast The latter was close up throughout and fin ¬ ished gamely on the inside Zachary which was close up in the early stages only to tire suddenly in the final seventy yards out ¬ lasted Street Singer for the minor portion of the purse
