CREDENTIALS OF STARTERS Brief Summary of Accomplishments of Kentucky Derby Candidates This and Last Year. The racing credentials of the starters in the Kentucky Derby are, for the most part, generally known to the rank and file of turf devotees, but, as is the case each year, many persons who only casually visit the race tracks are found among the immense gathering at Churchill Downs on Derby Day, while throughout this broad land of ours thousands and thousands who will listen in when the Derby is broadcast over the air may be anxious to learn what these prized thoroughbreds have accomplished to induce their owners to send them after the coveted prize. For that reason Daily Racing Form presents a brief summary of the racing of each of the starters, as shown below : TWENTY GRAND. Made eight starts at two and won four, including the Junior Champion Stakes and the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes in 1:36, the fastest time ever recorded by a two-year-old in the history of racing. Finished second to Equipoise in the Pimlico Futurity and third to Mate and Sweep All in the Walden Handicap. Total earnings as a two-year-old was 1,380. As a three-year-old he started twice, winning the Wood Memorial Stakes and finishing second to Mate in the Preakness. Earned 5,200. Total amount won, 6,580. MATE. Started fifteen times at two and won eight races, including the Champagne Stakes, Breeders Futurity, Spalding Lowe Jenkins and Walden Handicaps. Second to Tarpaulin in Richard Johnson Stakes; third to Jamestown and Equipoise in Futurity Stakes at Belmont and third to Equipoise and Twenty Grand in Pimlico Futurity. Total earnings as a two-year-old was 8,650. Made two starts as a three-year-old. winning the Preakness and finishing third to Ladder and Panetian in a purse race. Earned 8 350. Total amount won, 07,000. EQUIPOISE. Made sixteen starts at two and won eight, including Keene Memorial, Juvenile, National Stallion and Great American Stakes, Easter Shore Handicap and Pimlico Futurity. Second to Mate in Champagne Stakes; Jamestown, in Belmont Futurity; Twenty Grand in Junior Champion Stakes and the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes. Third to Vander Pool and Up in Aberdeen Stakes. Total earnings as a two-year-old, 56,835. Started three times in 1931, winning a purse race, finished fourth to Mate, Twenty Grand and Ladder in the Preakness and finished unplaced in Chesapeake Stakes. Earned ,000. Total amount won, 59,835. LADDER. Made eighteen starts at two, won three, second five times and twice third. Won fall running of Pimlico Home-bred Stakes; second to Sun Meadow in Grab Bag Handicap; third to Jamestown and Novelist in Grand Union Hotel Stakes; fourth to Mate, Equipoise and Sunny Lassie in Champagne Stakes. Total earnings as a two-year-old, ,540. Started four times as a three-year-old, winning the Jennings Handicap and a purse race. Third to Mate and Twenty Grand in Preakness, and third to Flaming and Colossal in a purse race. Earned ,770. Total amount won, 5,310. INSCO. Started seven times at two and won four, including the Post and Paddock Stakes, in which he beat a field of eleven, among which were Bar Hunter, Siskin, Back Log, Betty Derr and Pittsburgher. Finished fourth in Bashford Manor Stakes to Back Log, Don Leon and La Salle. Made two starts in 1931, and was unplaced on both occasions. Total amount won, 3,595. BOYS HOWDY. As a two-year-old was started ten times, and won two races worth ,600. Made nine starts this year, four of which he won. His victories included the Turismo Cup and the Cuban Grand National Handicap. In the last named, which was worth 0,200, he beat Swinfield by a neck, and was conceded but two pounds, the mile and an eighth being run in 1:5025, a new track record at Havana. He finished second to Bad News Bob in the Jose Marti Handicap and fourth to Lightning Bolt, Spanish Play and Mynheer in the Florida Derby. Total amount won, 8,730. DON LEON. Made eighteen starts at two, and won nine, including the Idle Hour Stakes, Cincinnati Trophy, Chicago Juvenile and Queen City Handicaps. Finished second to Back Log, beaten a nose, in the Bashford Manor Stakes; second to Equipoise in the Eastern Shore Handicap; second to Oswego in the Orphanage Stakes; Third to Back Log and Oswego in Harold Stakes; fourth to Siskin, Schooner and Rusty in Joliet Handicap. Earned 4,443. Has made two starts this year, finishing third on one occasion. Total amount won, 4,593. SURF BOARD. Started twelve times at two, and won four, including the Saratoga Sales Stakes, Albany and Blemton Handicaps. Second to Checkerberry in the Eastview Stakes; second to Sun Meadow in the Sanford Stakes; third to Sun Meadow and Ladder in the Grab Bag Handicap. Fourth to Mate, Sweep All and Twenty Grand in the Walden Handicap. Earned 5,475 as a two-year-old. Won two of his three starts this year, including the Kings County Handicap, in which he beat Reveille Boy, Mokatam, Maya and four others. Total amount won, 6,475. ANCHORS AWEIGH. Made fifteen starts as a two-year-old, and won five, including the Autumn Day Stakes, Baldwin and Ardsley Handicaps. He also finished third to Surf Board and Commuter in the Blemton Stakes. Earned 3,485 in 1930. Won his only two starts this year, one of which was the Chesapeake Stakes. Total amount won, 4,435. SWEEP ALL. Made seven starts as a two-year-old and won three, including the Endurance Handi- cap. He was second to Mate in the Walden Handicap. Earned 5,000. Failed to win any of his four starts this year, but finished second and third. Total amount won, 5,500. PITTSBURGHER. Made thirteen starts as a two-year-old and won one, was second twice and three times third. Earned ,050. Won three of his five starts this year, and finished third once. Total amount won, ,450. SPANISH PLAY. Won his only two starts as a two-year-old, and earned ,800. Has raced twelve times in 1931. Six victories stand to his credit, including the Louisiana Derby, Rex and Crescent City Hadicaps. He was second to Lightning Bolt in the Florida Derby. Total amount won, 9,015. PRINCE DAMOUR. Made four starts as a two-year-old, and won twice. Beat a field of ten in the Louisiana Juvenile Stakes. Earned ,175. Won two of his ten starts this year, including the Derby Trial Handicap at the Fair Grounds; was second to Spanish Play in the Louisiana Derby and fourth to Spanish Play, Ima Dreamer and Hyman in the Rex Handicap. Total amount won, 0,245. UP. Made twelve starts as a two-year-ojd, and won five, including the "Spring Juvenile Stakes. Was second to Vander Pool in the Aberdeen Stakes; second to Gigantic in the Spring running of the Pimlico Home-Bred Stakes; second to Happy Scot in the Pimlico Nursery Stakes. Earned 2,285. Won five of his fourteen starts this year, including the Agua Caliente Derby. Was second to Caruso in the California Handicap; second to Schooner in the Derby Trial Stakes; third to Alexander Pantages and Knights Call in the San Diego Handicap; third to Caruso and Good and Hot in the George Washington Handicap, all at Agua Caliente. Total amount won, 9,085. THE MONGOL. Made eight starts as a two year-old and won two races. A six furlongs race over a hard strip and a five and one-half furlongs race on a slow track. Earned ,600. Finished second to Best Man in one of his three starts this year. Ran unplaced in the Trial Purse, won by Pittsburgher. Total amount won, ,825.
