TOP FLIGHT ENTERED IN AMERICAN DERBY . . , . H C. V. Whitneys Unbeaten Filly in Washington Parks Rich Race G. D. Wideners Evening Also Named, Together With Burning Blaze, Tick On, Osculator, Hygro and Other Prominent Three-Year-Olds The American Derby, at one time" invested with the same degree of popularity and prominence now accorded the Kentucky Derby, still retains a warm place in the hearts of the horsemen, judging by the entries for the 1932 running, which will be held on Saturday, June 18. According to C. W. Hay, general manager of- the Washington Park Jockey Club, every three-year-old in America with any pretentions to class was named for the 0,000 prize when nominations closed on March 2. The list of American Derby entries is headed by C. V. Whitneys unbeaten filly, Top Flight, which rules winter book favorite for both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. Mr. Whitney also has named his marvelous filly for the Illinois Oaks and three others for the Derby. Another sensational filly named for the American Derby, which was not nominated for the Kentucky Derby or Preakness Stakes, is G. D. Wideners Evening, winner of the Florida Derby and thef best racer seen in the South this winter. The daughter of St. James is gifted with remarkable speed and appears able to carry it over a long distance of ground. Mrs. Payne Whitney, owner of the Green-tree Stable, has made six entries. W. R. Coe entered four, headed by Osculator and Laughing Queen, both stake winners last year. M. L. Schwartz has four, including Barcelona Pete. Mrs. John Hay Whitney is represented by three entries. Mrs. Graham Fair Vanderbilt names her sterling colt, Sweeping Light. Mrs. L. G. Kaufmann entered Tick On, considered by many as Top Flights most dangerous rival for three-year-old horses. Nash Brothers have named Burning Blaze, probably the best two-year-old colt of 1931, and a formidable candidate for all of the rich prizes offered for three-year-olds this year. SPEEDY HYGRO NAMED. Other American Derby entries include E. R. Bradleys Burgoo King, the fleet son of Bubbling Over, and three others; the Three Ds Stock Farms Liberty Limited and two others; the Nevada Stock Farms swift stake winning colt, Hygro. William Woodward, chairman of the New York Jockey Club, has made three entries. W. F. Axton has entered Monks First, winner of the Cuban Derby, and A. B. Letellier entered Sazerac, winner of the Derby Trial at. New Orleans. The detailed official list to be published later will find every high-class American stable represented. All the Washington Park stakes to be run at the meeting, which begins May 23, have drawn a record list of entries. This includes the Illinois Oaks for three-year-old fillies, three handicaps for three-year-olds and over and two stakes for two-year-olds. Phar Lap, the Australian champion now in training for the Agua Caliente Handicap, will make his first appearance in the middle west at Washington Park in the Pea-body Memorial and the Robert M. Sweitzer Handicaps. It is probable that he will meet A. C. Bostwicks American Derby winner, Mate, in both of these stakes.
