ANOTHER AMERICAN DERBY STAR ELIMINATED ECONOMIC GOES LAME Injured After Mile and a Quartet! Work Tuesday Morning. Great Race Still Certain, With Prob able Field of a Dozen Well Matched Contestants. HOMEWOOD, 111., June 14. The field for the 0,000 added American Derby, to be renewed at one mile and a quarter at Washington Park here Saturday, lost another leading light and one of the outstanding colts among the eastern contingent when J. H. Louchheims Economic was found to have ruptured the sheeth of his left foreleg while working the Derby route of one mile and a quarter in 2:10 over the local track this morning.. The injury did not manifest itself until some time after the son of Infinite had left the track following his trial, in which he moved so swiftly and boldly, particularly in the final quarter, that several horsemen who witnessed it doubted that the colt went wrong during the workout. Economic is the third formidable candidate for the American Derby overtaken by misfortune within a fortnight. Col. E. R. Bradleys Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner, Burgoo King, suffered a bowed tendon in a trial at New York last Friday, and G. D. Wideners brilliant filly, Evening, winner of the Florida Derby and Chesapeake Stakes, has been out of training for ten days due to an injury received on the morning of the Illinois Oaks, in which she was scheduled to make her bow before Washington Park patrons. EASTERN HOPEFULS. Despite the ill fortune that has attended this richest and principal race of the Washington Park meeting, it is assured one of the finest and most closely matched fields since its revival in 1926. As Economic went out today, such brilliant eligibles as Mrs. John Hay Whitneys StepenfetcLit, Walter M. Jeffords Boatswain and M. L. Schwartz Gusto, all eastern hopefuls, swung into line with others from both East and West as positive starters. A field of twelve and possibly as many as fifteen will start, track officials believe. Along with the flashy eastern trio that joined the positive starters today, the race, among the outstanding classics of the American turf, will engage W. R. Coes Osculator, A. Bartelsteins Yonkel, W. S. Kilmers Sunmelus, Knebelkamp and Morris Adobe Post, W. J. Salmons Mad Pursuit, H. P. Headleys Big Beau, C. B. Shaffers Marmion, J. B. Respess Our Fancy and probably A. Sabaths I Say, Nash Bros. Minton, R. M. Eastmans Cathop, and Prince Hotspur, owned by the Estate of Joseph Leiter. A field of about a dozen, the popular and ideal size, makes for a clean and true run race on a track such as the Washington Park course, with its sweeping turns and long main and back stretches. With chances for crowding or interference at a minimum, Saturdays battle, regardless of track conditions, promises the most bitterly contested race in the recent record of the fixture. Also, if the racing strip is fast, the race may prove the fastest by three-year-olds at the mile and a quarter distance this season. ARRIVES AT ARLINGTON. Stepenfetchit, along with a number of stable companions, reached Chicago, where he will campaign the next six weeks. Trainer Jim Healy shipped the son of The Porter along with his mates to Arlington Pxrk, from where the flashy three-year-old will be vanned to Washington Park. He was reported in fine fettle following the trip from New York and Healy plans, to bring on Linus McAtee to ride the Whitney colt in Saturdays race, his first major engagement since the Kentucky Derby, in which he finished third to Burgoo King and Economic. Boatswain, fresh from his hollow victory in the Withers Stakes, the running of which found Burgoo King badly boaten, and Gusto, a rapidly improving colt by American Flag, a son of Man o War, sire of Boatswain, will reach Washington Park from Aqueduct Thursday, according to advices received by Continued on twenty-first page.. ECONOMIC GOES LAME Continued from first page. track officials here Tuesday. Boatswain promises to give Stepenfetchit plenty contention for the post of favoritism Saturday, shrewd judges in good numbers stringing with the Withers winner. Adobe Post, Yonkel, Sunmelus, Big Beau, Our Fancy and Mad Pursuit, which contested the mile and seventy yards Niles Center Purse at Washington Park Monday, continued in the running for Derby starting places today. Adobe Post, winner of the Niles Center, came out of the race in fine condition, as. did Yonkel, the rising locally-owned threat, Sunmelus and the others. Over a fast track at the local course this morning Osculator and Economic were seen in important testing gallops at the Derby route. The former, paced by the veteran Dr. Freeland, went one mile and a quarter in 2:11, well in hand, and Economic covered the same route in 2:10, handily. The lattei ran the half mile in :52, three-quarters in 1:17, mile in 1:44, and one mile and an eighth in 1:56. He moved swiftly arid boldly when lightly shaken up in the final quarter, and not until later was it discovered that he had injured his leg, which will keep him out of the Derby. Rated on even terms with Dr. Freeland throughout the long drill, Osculator covered the half mile in :48, three-quarters in 1:14, mile in 1.41, and went one mile and an eighth .in 1:56. It was an excellent trial that greatly pleased trainer Benny Creech, head of Mr. Coes staff of trainers.
