ELF LOCKS FAST MILE Brings Victory Over Polydorus in Detroits Featured Event Whitney Filly Establishes New Track TrackRecord Record of 1 37 Vfc in Taking Sagi Saginaw naw Purse Large Crowd DETROIT Mich May 21 Favored with the light impost of 89 12 pounds C V Whitneys Elf Lock ran the mile of the Saginaw Purse at the Fair Grounds this afternoon in 137 and beat A Bartel steins Polydorus for the major portion of the 1000 purse that was the fifth and main event of the program H C Hatchs fa ¬ vored Propectile was third The winner es ¬ tablished a new track record covering the mile in one and fourfifths seconds faster than the track record established by Deduce last fall fallThere There was a quick start to the race and the winner ridden by S Hebert was out ¬ run to the first turn Projectile and Poly ¬ dorus went out to show the way with Projectile Jungle King and Elf Lock fol ¬ lowing in the order named Entering the back stretch they raced in this order but P Sage was biding his time with Polydorus and after threequarters he sent the latter into command Hebert was also making his move with the Whitney filly and although selecting the outside route the small field worked to his advantage and he held Elf Lock lapped on Polydorus midway of the stretch From there on Polydorus and Elf Lock battled gamely with the latter forging to the front in the last seventy yards After his early burst of speed Speedy Skippy dropped out of contention while Jungle King was never able to improve his position There was an even pace to the race the first quarter being covered in 24 the half mile in 47 and the threequarters in 112 Elf Lock paid 1760 The latter made it two in a row for the New York sportsman sportsmanTRACK TRACK AT ITS BEST BESTAn An unusually large crowd was present for Monday and although the weather was very warm there was a refreshing breeze that made conditions pleasant The racing strip was at its best Another track record went by the boards when George Ogles Miney Myerson a 4 to 5 choice lasted to beat Candescent at the end of the five and a half furlongs in the sixth race In sprinting the distance in 105 Miney Myerson clipped a fifth of a second from the track record established by Solid American last fall Pre War was third and the best of the three others othersWith With the exception of Martin Barton which enjoyed third place to the stretch the others offered no serious threat threatAfter After four previous attempts Hal Price Headleys Air Squadron was graduated from the maiden juvenile ranks when she scored at odds of 9 to 10 over Cristate Carmanchita and six other maidens that engaged under claiming conditions in the opening dash dashBenefited Benefited by the rough tactics employed by F Sargent his rider A J Halliwells Style Corner got up to beat Red Run at the end of the threequarters second race which attracted a field of eight Dr Syntax which raced on the outside throughout was third thirdROUGH ROUGH RIDING TACTICS TACTICSWhile While Red Run was showing the way to the others down the back stretch Style Cor ¬ ner came over sharply impeding Morsun in the run to the far turn and after reaching the stretch he bore over on Merry Chatter which was wrestingthe lead from Red Run Once disposing of the latter Style Corner made for the leader and in the closing stages got up to have an advantage of half a length at the end After the interference Merry Chatter gave way to Morgil another promi ¬ nent factor while Morsun dropped out of contention early and was a trailer there ¬ after Red Run and Morsun enjoyed equal favoritism favoritismSaving Saving ground throughout Mrs Dave Hums Meteoric headed the staunchly backed Salisbury at the end of the threequarters third race which attracted seven of the cheaper grade platers Third went to Lanier While the latter displayed the speed of the pack and failed to relinquish the lead to Continued on twentysixth page ELF LOCKS FAST MILE MILEContinued Continued from first page Salisbury when he challenged entering the stretch the winner came through on the inside in the run for home and wore down Salisbury after he had displaced Lanier as leader in the final sixteenth sixteenthSassafras Sassafras scored his first victory for the year and the second of his career when the son of Chicle carried the C V Whitney colors to an easy victory over a band of eight others in the fourth race Genteel Lady choice with the winner was second five lengths in the wake of the latter and an equal distance before Come Seven SevenWhile While Genteel Lady and Come Seven dominated the pace the winner came out ¬ side the others to wear down Genteel Lady after reaching the stretch and drew away into his long lead Although Sassafras ap ¬ peared much the best Johnny Mattioli kept after the Whitney colorbearer and had him under pressure at the finish
