WASHINGTONPARKNEXT Chicagos Popular South Side Track to Open Its Gates Monday MondayStake Stake and Purse Money to Total TotalAbout About 350000 Approximately 1000 Horses Will Compete Washington Park the home of the Ameri ¬ can Derby will be the scene of Chicago racing beginning Monday when the metro ¬ politan season of 1937 will be inaugurated with a thirtyday meeting which is expected to surpass all previous sessions at the beau ¬ tiful Homewood course since the sport was established there The outlook never ap ¬ peared brighter for a wonderful meeting and Chicago turf enthusiasts are promised some of the best racing of the spring season With 1000 horses embracing the best of all divisions there will be no shortage of high class material to fill the daily and holiday programs A total of 350000 in stakes and purses will be hung up by the Washington Park Jockey Club and local devotees of the sport are assured of seeing the star threeyearolds and cracks of other ages competing for the rich prizes offered offeredPresident President Walter Gregory and his asso ¬ ciates in the Washington Park Jockey Club are offering seven stellar stake attractions nominations for which include the outstand ¬ ing horses of the year The list is headed by the historic American Derby to be run for the twentyeighth time and this famous Chicago race has attracted the names of War Admiral Pompoon and others Coming as it does just three days before the worlds heavyweight championship fight between Jim Braddock and Joe Louis at Comiskey Park the American Derby assures Chicago of its biggest sporting weekend in years yearsJUVENILE JUVENILE FEATURES FEATURESThe The inaugural runnings of the Washing ¬ ton Park Futurity and the Princess Pat Stakes share the spotlight with the Ameri ¬ can Derby The wisdom of adding these two juvenile events to the program is proved by the presence at the track of more highly prized youngsters than ever before The Futurity is expected to gross better than 40000 with the Princess Pat carrying bet ¬ ter than 25000 in prizes for the fleetest fillies filliesIn In addition to these three rich events four other stakes will be contested the Great Western the Blue and Gray Handicap on Memorial Day and two features on the first Saturday the Prairie State for two yearolds and the Chicago Handicap No purse during the meeting will be less than 1000 and racing secretary Charles Mc ¬ Lennan has carded a 1200 feature for every afternoon afternoonIt It is the plan of the Washington Park Jockey Club to run off the eight daily races in short streamlined order and with the speedy Illinois Central electric service serv ¬ ing the track patrons will be back in the city earlier than ever everEYE EYE IN SKY TOWER TOWERWith With the huge eye in the sky tower serving as the nerve center of operations the track will be a model for efficient opera ¬ tion Besides the cameras atop the tower the structure houses radio announcers the public address system offices for the track superintendent and the new glassedin Continued on thirtieth page WASHINGTONPARKNEXT Continued from first page stand for the placing judges judgesImprovements Improvements at Washington Park in ¬ clude a new addition to the totalisator board showing all program changes and track con ¬ ditions builtin shelves in each box and wiring in all the stables Washington Parks giant totalisator is primed and ready for a record meeting meetingAmong Among the stables to race at Washington Park are those of Mrs Ethel V Mars War ¬ ren Wrights Calumet Farm the Tranquillity Farm the Valdina Farms the Bomar Stable E R Bradley Mrs W H Furst the Wool ford Farm Mrs John Hertz John E Hughes Clarence Davison Miss Mary Hirsch the LeMar Stock Farm the Shandon Farm and Phil Reilly All leading eastern stables as well have made liberal stake nominations and will be represented during at least part of the month monthOfficials Officials for the meeting have been changed little over a year ago Roy Dicker son will again serve as starter Charles McLennan as racing secretary and also as one of the stewards In the stand with him will be A G Weston of Maryland andC J FitzGerald for the state racing commission
