JOSHS FIRST OF YEAR Registers Decisive Triumph in Fon ¬ taine Ferry Claiming Purse Likewise Makes It a Triple for Fer ¬ guson Herndon Stable Trio Saddled by 0 H Ferguson LOUISVILLE Ky May 21 Showing his smartest performance of the season Josh rown son of Jock and Edna Cook owned y Ferguson and Herndon scored his first victory of the year and the third of the afternoon for his connections when he won the Fontaine Ferry Claiming Purse a sprint of threequarters which was one of the prin ¬ cipal offerings here at Churchill Downs to ¬ day dayOpposing Opposing seven of his age Josh proved himself one of the more decisive winners of the day when he registered by three engths as the favored Wise Dart furnished by F A Burtons Everglade Stable nosed out S McPhersons Chanting for second Dthers in the contest were Tedall Gene Wagers John Allen I Chase and Golden Ariel and they finished in that order Josh ran the distance in 112 112Previous Previous to Joshs success the Ferguson establishment had furnished winners In Miss Wise and Pierre Andre and the triple was only the second during the present meeting he feat having been credited to trainer Ben A Jones and the Woolford Farm stable All of the Ferguson horses were saddled by 3 H Ferguson who used three riders G bowler R Hutton and P Roberts the latter laving the assignment on Josh TOO MUCH OPPOSITION OPPOSITIONSent Sent out to make the pace Wise Dart had o withstand a steady battering from the start and when the winner hurled his chal enge it was too much for the Everglade iilly For about half the distance Gene Wagers forced Wise Dart to maintain a fast pace to retain a scant advantage and when Roberts moved with the winner in the stretch Wise Dart offered little resistance Running an even race Chanfing did all of her racing in the third place placeThe The program was staged on a fast track and under summerlike weather conditions conditionsPierre Pierre Andre also from the Ferguson barn but with apprentice R Hutton in the saddle carried the straw colors of his Ken ¬ tucky owner to their second victory jta suc cessive races when he scored over Blazing Torch Amijo Cherokee Red and sixofJbLers in the second race which was under the same conditions as governed the openipg race raceEASILY EASILY DRAWS CLEAR CLEARRated Rated in close pursuit as first Noyette and then Blazing Torch set the pace Pierre Andre took command in the stretch and was racing easily as he reached the wire about two TorchAs lengths before Blazing Torch As one of the shortest priced winners of the afternoon Sweet Guinea gave her back ¬ ers some anxious moments before she finally made good over a cheap field at one mile Continued on thirtysecond page JOSHS FIRST OF YEAR Continued Jrom first page and a sixteenth in the third race Last to leave the starting stalls and fully a dozen lengths behind the leader as the field reached the back stretch Sweet Guinea be ¬ gan to catch her rivals but upon reaching the front in the stretch tired badly and was forced to a drive to win by a little more than a length Gustavia raced to the place some five lengths before Dunwin The winner was ridden by L Haas and paid 3 to 5 5Winning Winning in one of the more thrilling fin ¬ ishes Blue Ridge Stock Farms Transfun scored the second victory for the public choices when she accounted for the claim ¬ ing fourth race at six and onehalf furlongs Running the distance in 119 the Chicago owned daughter of Transmute and Fun won by a half length while Dokas which took down second honors led Brilliant Light by a neck Barbara J which was fourth was only a head back of Brilliant Light
