OFF TO A GOOD START tb Downs Inaugural Program Crowd and Handle Pleases Here Than 500 Horses Unloaded During WeekEnd Cloudy for First Twilight Card CLEVELAND Ohio July 17 With a bril ¬ liant opening past Thistle Down settled down into its first full week of a 44day meeting this afternoon Cloudy weather pre ¬ vailed for the first twilight program which got under way at 430 but the crowd was a very large one The offering was not up to the standard expected to hold forth from now on but with more than 500 horses un ¬ loading here over the weekend and stalls reserved for an additional 200 there should be no lack of capable material Races that should suit every kind of performer are writ ¬ ten in the first book of conditions and this policy will be continued throughout the seven weeks of racing racingThe The mutuel handle Saturday was better than anticipated by general manager Edw P Strong and his associates and when the public gets a better line on the horses it is expected to increase steadily The Ohio rule that specifies that purchases of mutuel tick ¬ ets must cease when horses are within 150 feet of the starting point was enforced lo the letter Saturday and this is said to have prevented numerous patrons from purchas ¬ ing tickets ticketsBIG BIG WEEK PLANNED PLANNEDA A big week of racing has been planned for the coming five days Several of the nearby cities will be honored The Turf Handicap will top Wednesdays program which has been set aside as Youngstown Day and the supporting attraction will be named in honor of that city cityThe The City of Akron will be honored Thurs ¬ day and Friday will be Canton Day Ar ¬ rangements have been made to take care of the visitors from these cities and a sec ¬ tion of the grandstand will be set aside for them themAlthough Although an allclaiming race program was offered today the fields were very evenly matched and competition was brisk The best field a juvenile affair met over the Thistle Down Course for the sixth race and Little Davey was the prepost favorite He was opposed by Grace D Mummer Spot lamp BoyThe Jobelle Kantaka and Columbias Boy The supporting attraction was for better grade plater 3yearolds with Grey Dog Adoress and Lady Alpha coming in for the most attention attentionFive Five of the eight races were run over six furlongs and the seventh and eighth races were decided at one mile and forty yards
