PETES NIECE TRIUMPHS WITH SPEED IN RESERVE RESERVEHas Has Three and Half Lengths to Spare Over Lucky Hattie in Detroit Introductory Event EventDETROIT DETROIT Mich May 23 Petes Niece sporting the silks of B M Mitchell scored an easy three and a half lengths victory in the first race a sixfurlong spriit at the Detroit Fair Grounds today Well ridden by George Wallace the Mitchell mare came to the close with speed to spare and held her advantage over James C Ellis Lucky Hattie without need of strong urging Minor honors fell to B M Smiths favored Codoll which downed the nine other fillies and mares which met metAfter After a delay at the post caused by the fractious Tacky Sue starter Bryan Steele sent the field off in good alignment and it was Codoll which set the pace for the first half mile Petes Niece was in closest pur ¬ suit and Euneva held on well in third posi ¬ tion until straightened for the drive Enter ¬ ing the stretch Wallace called upon Petes Niece and the Mitchell mare responded read ¬ ily to take command After shaking off Codoll in the final furlong the winning com ¬ bination then had no trouble withstanding Lucky Hatties closing challenge challengePetes Petes Niece well supported In the wager ¬ ing returned odds of 3 to 1 and stepped the distance over the good track in 115 115COOL COOL WEATHER PREVAILS PREVAILSPartly Partly cloudy and cool weather prevailed for the deciding of the eightrace program at the Fair Grounds oval today but another banner crowd turned out to witness the sport Due to the intermittent showers which visited the track at a late hour yes ¬ terday the racing strip was slightly off for the earlier events but improved some ¬ what as the card progressed Betting which got away to a good start on the first two days of the 1941 season was again brisk and track officials were more than satis ¬ fied with the business thus far farAlthough Although the program was made up en tirelyvof claiming events both the fifth and sixth races drew better than average fields and served as cofeatures The former was for twoyearolds and such clever youngsters as C W Damons Sun Risk B L Whit tens Dark Leona Lucky Teters Precision Max Wexlers Royal Minuet Mrs L Frys Bebeja and the Brown Hotel Stables First Draftee matched strides over the four and onehalf furlongs distance Bebeja was stoutly backed for the dash dashThe The six furlongs of the sixth was con ¬ tested by a small but select band which included E R Plunketts Chandera F Cencis Imperial Impy R A Forshas Even Roll J L McKnights Kantaka H H Prices Gayova and Beezley Cohns Siganar Even Roll and Siganar were well supported in the sprint sprintJockey Jockey Wallace completed a double in the Daily Double when he successfully piloted A L Fergusons favored Thea Dear to a tow and onehalf lengths decision in the second race which engaged twelve fillies and mares at six furlongs W E Balls Crulia finished second and was a nose in advance of False Point at the final marker Thea Dear was held at odds of 7 to 5 in the straight betting and completed the Daily Double which was worth 1460 1460Wallace Wallace rode his third straight winner when he scored with Holton Bros Jo Beulah in the third race at six furlongs French Trap finished second two and one half lengths before John McShanes Kates Kitten which was third
