FARRAGUT REFLECTIONS By CHALLENGER Eight Thirty on Sidelines Again Suburban Robbed of Its Glamour Hollywood Gold Cup Nominations Farragut in 75000 Fixture Fridays renewal of the Suburban Handicap at Belmont Park was robbed of much of its glamour when it was announced this morning that Eight Thirty easy winner of the Metropolitan Handicap last weekend would not start in the holiday attraction at the Westchester Racing Associations track due to a filled pastern Turf fans throughout the country have looked forward with great expectation to the meeting of George D Wideners crack son of Pilate with Charles SHHowards Mioland in the mile and a quarter of this historic stake With Eight Thirty on the sidelines Mioland will be the starting top weight under 127 pounds In these days when much is heard of the Triple Crown we are all prone to forget the three events which down through the years have been the cream of New York track handicaps namely the Metropolitan Suburban and Brooklyn Before his injury Eight Thirty was looked upon to have a fine chance to take down honors in the three big New York handicaps Only one horse in history has been able to win the trio of metropolitan handicaps and that was Whisk Broom II which after returning from abroad won all three events in 1913 In the Suburban Whisk Broom H carried 139 pounds and since then Grey Lag won with 135 and Equipoise won in 1933 with 132 132Lately Lately we have been emphasizing the success of yearlings taken from the Saratoga Springs and Kentucky yearling sales The purchase of Eight Thirty now one of the greatest bargains of recent years has a different twist and this brings into explanation why George D Widener is listed as the breeder of the famous son of Pilate When W R Coe decided to disperse his stud the seventeenth to enter the ring at his Shoshone Stud dispersal on Nov 11 1935 was the chestnut mare Dinner Time a daughter of High Time Seaplane by Man o War It was announced from the ring that this mare was in foal to Pilate and from an opening1 bid of 2000 the price quickly soared to 6000 at which George D Widener led the mare from the ring In the spring of 1936 Dinner Time dropped the foal later to be known as Eight Thirty a horse which has since won over twenty times the purchase price While he is weak in the underpinning anJ cannot be raced for long stretches at a time it may be that like many another before him his greatest value will be apparent when he is sent o stud For as said before besides pedigree and the proven ability to race he possesses about every qualification necessary for stud success successWith With sixtyfour named the Hollywood Gold Cup like the Hollywood Derby has set a new record in nominations Among those included are Whirlaway Challedon Big Pebble Mioland Sirocco Sweepida and that iron horse Specify which has finished in the money in every renewal to date and opposed such as Seabiscuit Challedon Sorteado Kayak II Lawrin and Cravat Quite a few fillies have been named and we cannot recall a year when so many threeyearolds have been named for the 75000 added race Besides Whirlaway there is Our Boots Porters Cap Roman Governor Staretor Copper Man Cute Trick and the imported pair Colorado Lad and Fair mond Those two must be added to the outlanders Sierra Nevada and Paperboy from England Meissen from Peru Chico from Ireland Two Ton Tony from New Zealand and the Argentine quartet of Don Juan II Don Bingo II Barrancosa and Beautiful II Every wellknown stable on the Coast has entered a horse for this event even to Don Ameche nominating his threeyearold Shantytown Besides Challedon W L Brann has named Aethelwold and though Mrs Anthony Pelleteri has named Bay View winner of the Santa Anita Handicap the Millsdale Stable of which Anthony Pelleteri is a partner has named Sun Lover which defeated Eight Thirty and Challedon in the Kent Handicap and ran Challedon to a neck in the Classic with the favorite Johnstown down the track trackOne One of the most interesting horses named for the Hollywood Gold Cup is the Otay Stables Farragut the current marathon champion of the West Coast He was not beaten much to date but the manner in which he has defeated his rivals has caused the western writers to call him the amazing Farragut A son of Annapolis he was bred and raised by Mrs Marion duPont Scott and when Battleship was returned to this country after winning the Aintree Grand National Farragut was his boon companion at the Scott Farm He was first started as a jumper and was taken last winter to Agua Caliente At the hot water track he created a worlds record for three miles having been converted from a jumper to a flat racer for that particular day After that he was kept on the flat and at Bay Meadows won both of his starts including the two and a half mile Thornton Stakes Whether he will be able to turn on his speed at one and onequarter miles and against such speedsters as are entered is doubt ¬ ful Then again we all said the same about the converted juniper Azucar which in winning the inaugural running of the Santa Anita Handicap defeated some of the best tenfurlong racers on the American continent continentAndy Andy K star from the Millsdale Stable is certainly in the handicappers eyes these days He has been assigned 124 for the Tomasello Handicap at Suffolk Downs on Friday and 126 for the Wilmington Handicap which will be staged at Delaware Park on Saturday This is the third time the Pelleteri horse has been given high weight in stakes at the Boston track At Lincoln Fields Joe Schenck has been assigned the top weight of 120 for the Francis S Peabody Memorial Handicap to be run on Friday and in New York Third Degree was given the post of honor with 126 pounds in the Rosebcn Handicap Dr Whinny is second with 121 King Cole third with 119 thus making him head man on the scale while Bay View winner of the Santa Anita Handicap has been assigned 118 along with Gilded Knight On the same card with the Roseben Belmont Park will stage the Coaching Club American Oaks for which Level Best qualified so handsomely in her trial on Monday The Coaching Club has been won by some of the greatest threeyearold fillies in turf history including Cleo ¬ patra Princess JJoreen Florence Nightingale Bateau Top Flight Black Helen Dawn Play Creole Maid War Plumage and last year Damaged Goods A small field will likely answer the bugle and at this writing it looks like Level Best all the way
