MODERN AQUEDUCT TO OPEN MEETING MONDAY REFLECTIONS B CHALLENGER New Aqueduct Opens Meeting Nine Important Stakes to Be Rtin Delaware Stages Oaks and Kent Commonwealth at Suffolk Saturday The New York racing scene shifts with Mondays opening of the rebuilt Aqueduct course Belmont Parks astonishing success can be mainly attributed to the increased popularity of horse racing and was but a harbinger of golden turnstile and tote out ¬ pourings for the Aqueduct management and the state Continuing until July 2 with i ipire City and Saratoga Springs following Aqueduct will offer nine important stake events the most attractive of which is the 10000 added Dwyer for threeyearolds at one and onequarter miles on Saturday June 21 and the 25000 added Brooklyn Handicap for threeyearolds and older horses at one and onequarter miles on Satur ¬ day June 28 The opening feature is the 5000 added Queens County Handicap The Shevlin for threeyearolds to be run Wednesday drew nominations of the best three yearolds in the land and at this writing a fine field promises to face starter Cassidy Next Saturday June 14 a double feature will attract the fans the most important of the two events being the 7500 added Carter Handicap for threeyearolds and older horses at seven furlongs with fortythree nominated The Carter has Harvard Square King Cole Dispose and other threeyearolds as possible opponents for Dr Whinny Haltal The Chief Robert L Volitant Doubt Not Roman Flag Roman and other older horses With the Carter the 5000 added Astoria will be featured on next Saturdays Aqueduct card This race for twoyearold fillies will attract many of the well bred youngsters which season after season come to the races with pedigree and appearance as the basis of his owners hopes By fall many will have passed to the claiming ranks if not to oblivion In the rise or fall of the baby racers and the expectations of another Tremont Domino or Top Flight is one of the sporting angles of horse racing Following the Astoria once the Astoria Dinner Stakes with Champagne n everything Aqueduct will stage the 5 000 added Tremont for twoyearold colts and geldings on Saturday June 21 and the Great American with 5000 added for twoyearolds on Saturday June 28 Many of Americas famous stables have nominated youngsters for these baby events the most notable of which are the Belair Stud Breymann Farm Walter Chrysler Jr Brookmeade Stable Calumet Farm Coldstream Stable Manhasset Stable and of course the Vanderbilts Whitneys and Wideners Virtually every fashionable stallion is represented some of the most attractive babes being Walter Chryslers Look Of Eagle by Stimulus Raj Kumar by Bahrain Ramillies by Blenheim II Greentree Stables Shut Out by Equipoise and John Hay Whitneys Buster a bay colt by Bull Dog Felina II IIFollowing Following Wednesdays 2000 added Spring Maiden Steeplechase Delaware Park will offer two highly interesting events in the Delaware Oaks on Thursday and the Kent Handicap on Saturday The Oaks for threeyearold fillies drew the nominations of Level Best and Dark Discovery which finished onetwo in the Coaching Club American Oaks besides Strange Device Tangled Sister Union Misty Isle and War Hazard With 6500 added Mrs Marion duPont Scott has presented a cup and William duPont Jr presents to the owner of the winner a replica of this cup for permanent possession The Kent Handicap with 10000 added is at one and one sixteenth miles for threeyearolds and with seventyeight nominations drew Whirl away Bold Irishman Our Boots Sky Raider Mettlesome Master Henry Minnelusa and Cis Marion Since its inaugural in 1937 the Kent has been the medium of fine contests the winners being Strabo Stormscud Sun Lover and Andy K As at Aqueduct Delaware Park is featuring events for juveniles the 5000 added Polly Drummond Stakes for fillies to be run on June 28 and the 5000 added Christiana Stakes for twoyearold colts and geldings scheduled for July 4 Named for the latter event are Sun Again Some Chance Albatross Ramillies Coochs Bridge and others othersAt At Suffolk Downs on Saturday the feature event will be the 5000 added Commonwealth Handicap for threeyearold fillies at six furlongs while out at Lincoln Fields in Chicago they will stage the LaSalle Handicap for three yearolds and upward at one and threesixteenths miles Suffolk Downs will continue until July 19 when the 15000 added Mayflower Stakes for twoyear olds at five furlongs will be the attraction In Chicago however Lincoln Fields will close on Saturday June 21 with the running of the 5000 added Lincoln Handicap for threeyearolds and older horses The important Arling ¬ ton Park meeting will open on June 23 and continue to July 31 at which time Saratoga Springs will be open for the traditional EastWest duels at the up ¬ state Spa The opening event at Arlington will be the 2500 added Myrtlewood Handicap for threeyearolds and upward and on Wednesday of the opening week the 2500 added Primer Stakes for juveniles will be decided On Satur ¬ day June 28 the 7500 added Arlington Matron Handicap for fillies and mares at one mile will be featured July will be an interesting month at Chicagos largest track with the 10000 Stars and Stripes Handicap on July 4 10000 Arlington Lassie on July 5 and followed by the 20000 Arlington Futurity July 12 and the 40000 Classic highlight of the meeting on July 26 The closing day July 31 feature will be the 5000 added Hyde Park Stakes for twoyear olds at six furlongs furlongsWith With June now in bloom the Hollywood Park meeting will speed on to important events For the remainder of this month 10000 added events will grace the weekend cards On Saturday they will stage the 10000 added Sequoia Handicap for fillies and mares at seven furlongs The 10000 Inglewood Handicap and the 10000 Vanity Handicap will be contested before July ushers in such rich events as the 20000 added American Handicap July 4 the 10000 added Starlet Stakes July 5 the 25000 added Hollywood Derby July 12 and the 75000 added Hollywood Gold Cup July 19
