ROUGH PASS CLOSES FAST TO DEFEAT RINGIE IN PURITAN PURITANComes Comes From Last Place to Take Down Honors in Suffolk Stake StakeBOSTON BOSTON Mass June 7 Before a crowd of 25000 Rough Pass from the stable of J Yancey Christmas turned in one of his top performances to race to a hard victory in the seventh running of the 5000 added Puritan Handicap weekend feature at Suf ¬ folk Downs decided over the ninefurlong distance Only six of the original nine Tiamed overnight paraded postward and the topweighted Ringie racing for Gustav Ring took the place It was a close fit for the remaining portions of the prize with J U Grattons Liberty Franc and Star Boarder from the Mrs Sam Orr barn reaching the finish to be separated by a nose for third and fourth places respectively respectivelyRough Rough Pass was chalking up his second triumph of the year and added 4370 to his earnings to bring his total for the season to 7370 Rough Pass a 275 yearling by his fast finish in last Saturdays Paul Re ¬ vere Handicap served notice that he was going to be mighty hard to handle in todays engagement Much of the credit for the Puritan victory can be laid to the particu ¬ larly strong ride put up by Henri Mora As the ByPass II colt trailed from the start Moia was a mighty busy individual Coming by the stand the first time he was whipping and kicking in a manner that suggested he was on a twoyearold in one of the short dashes While the ultimate winner raced far in the rear Liberty Franc was making the most of his early speed and sprinted cleai1 and Star Boarder followed Bold and Bad an invader from New York was show ¬ ing before Ringie as the field straightened out for the run through the back stretch Rough Pass was still last but Mora Avas rid ¬ ing the Christmas colt in brisk fashion The effort of Mora began to be rewarded when midway down the far side of the track the colt began to respond After a half mile Bold arid Bad was through Meanwhile Gil ¬ bert called upon Ringie for his best speed and it was instantly forthcoming forthcomingWINNER WINNER GAINING STEADILY STEADILYAfter After the first six furlongs had been completed Liberty Franc and the Orr five yearold were disputing the command Ringie was working his way to the leader steadily Rough Pass when beginning to better his position was finding racing room on the inside Nearing the turn for home Ringie had raced to within a length of the leader and straightening out for the run to the finish moved to the front Mora was still showering down on Rough Pass and the Christmas fouryearold was gaining steadily A stride or so after passing the furlong post Rough Pass had succeeded in wresting the lead from Ringie to come out to be three parts of a length to the good at the close closeDuring During the closing drive it was strictly a twohorse race Ringie driving into second place five lengths in advance of the tiring early leaders
