CHERRY JAM DRIVES TO VICTORY IN BRANDYWINE MASKED GENERAL FAILS IN DELAWARE FEATURE FEATUREGreentree Greentree Ace Holds HalfLength Margin Over Even Money Choice as Running Mate Finishes Third ThirdSTANTON STANTON Del June 7 Cherry Jam and Red Dock carried Mrs Payne Whitneys silks into first and third place in the fifth running of the Brandywine Handicap at Delaware Park this afternoon but many patrons in the crowd of 16000 thought Bran ¬ dywine Stables Masked General who fin ¬ ished a half length back of the winner and four lengths before Red Dock was the best horse in the field of seven The sevenyear old son of Pompey under the top impost of 117 pounds followed in closest pursuit of Cherry Jam after entering the final six fur ¬ longs of the one and onesixteenth miles and he in baseball parlance was forced to touch all the bases This no doubt took much out of the favorite and he was a weary horse at the end endWonderful Wonderful weather prevailed for the sport and with an election in Wilmington the holi ¬ day crowd neared that of last Saturday The wagering despite the heavy and uncertain track conditions was far above that for the same day last year yearAlbert Albert Bodiou contract rider for this divi ¬ sion of the Greentree Stable handled Cherry Jam who finished third in the Wilmington Handicap last Saturday and his good riding resulted in the son of St Brideaux and Cherry Tart achieving his first route tri ¬ umph The 5000 added prize was worth just that amount for the first lady of the turf turfCherry Cherry Jam chalked up his second stakes victory of the year the other one having been in the Phoenix Handicap at Keeneland The time of 157 was nearly eight seconds off the track record and the Greentiee entry returned 740 for each 2 It was the second choice WINNER DRIFTS OUT OUTMasked Masked General was the first in motion but Bodiou rushed the winner forward from his outside position and in so doing pinched Honey Cloud back Entering the back stretch Cherry Jam was clear of his field but Masked General moved alongside him soon afterwards and then Bodiou permitted Cher ¬ ry Jam to drift out This caused Masked General to lose much ground but he kept within a head of Cherry Jam and they raced as a team to the final stages where Cherry Jam came on to enjoy his winning margin Honey Cloud chased the leaders until enter ¬ ing the stretch and then Red Dock came fast on the inside Cavalier made up enough ground to gain fourth laurels and Robes ¬ pierre who held fourth position for five fur ¬ longs tired thereafter thereafterMarylandbred Marylandbred horses provided another winner when ILrs Veader Leonards Happy Lark was a driving victor of the fifth race which engaged six tpranking sprinting platers and which supported the feature and had its decision over six furlongs Sack with his fine speed held command to the stretch but was unable to withstand the winner but held on in game fashion to ake second honors two and a half lengths before Wood Chopper and a halflength back of Happy Lark Sky Lane saved fourth from Soldierette and Becomly who com ¬ pleted the field fieldFirst First in motion but reserved by Moose Peters when Sack challenged for the lead Happy Lark did not take command until approaching the final furlong He was under strong handling from there on
