PUNTA FINAL DRIVES TO FORE1 IN OPENING RACE AT DETROIT DETROITOvertakes Overtakes Pacemaking Hello Cap in Stretch for Popular Triumph TriumphDETROIT DETROIT Mich June 23 Punta Final fouryearold gelded son of Ariel and Key spring racing under the silks of J V Mur ¬ phy won a driving length victory in the first race at the Detroit Fair Grounds today The Brown Hotel Stables Hello Cap fin ¬ ished second a length and a half before Mrs Ivan Parkes favored Purple Wrack which took third honors from the eight other platers which met in the sixfurlong sprint sprintLittle Little time was lost at the post and starter Bryan Steele sent the horses off to a good start a halfminute after they reached the gate Hello Cap was first to show leav ¬ ing the stalls but was quickly displaced by Marin which took a halflength lead passing the first quarter post Vallejo raced third Purple Wrack was next and the ulti ¬ mate winner fifth fifthHello Hello Cap went back to lead again ap ¬ proaching the stretch and Marin began to shorten her stride dropping back thereafter beaten Punta Final moved up to third and LeBlanc who handled him went to the whip whipPURPLE PURPLE WRACK RUNS THIRD THIRDTurning Turning for home Hello Cap held a half length advantage over Purple Wrack and Punta Final raced third within striking distance of the pacemaker Hello Cap dis ¬ posed of Purple Wrack a sixteenth from the wire but did not have enough left to withstand Punta Finals fine closing bid bidRunning Running time over the fast track was 113 and Punta Final second choice in the wagering returned his supporters odds of 11 to 5 5Warm Warm but clear weather prevailed for the eightrace program decided at the local course today and an excellent crowd turned out to witness the sport The racing strip was at its best for the earlier contests and good times were registered in several of the better attractions Some close finishes added zest to the active atmosphere which pre ¬ dominated and betting rings were busy throughout the afternoon and evening eveningThe The fifth race the Billy Kelly Purse matched seven of the better sprinters here at six furlongs and served as the feature at ¬ traction The Plunkett Powell entry of Neighbor and Fetchet were well supported for the dash as was T D Buhls Bright Arc Others which went to the post for the Billy Kelly were Ottos Choice Mothers Girl Jim Pat and Sabra SabraTwelve Twelve ordinary platers met in the second race of six furlongs and it resulted in a frontrunning twolength victory for Pool Bros favored Joe Greenock Shirley R fin ¬ ished second a halflength before Johnny Q who lasted to save minor honors Patterson Milligan had the mount on Joe Greenock and had his hands full when his charge attempted to duck in a sixteenth out from the starting gate Milligan straightened Joe Greenock up and the combination then went wentContinued Continued on fifth page PUNTA FINAL DRIVES TO FORE IN OPENING RACE AT DETROIT DETROITContinued Continued from first page pageright right to the front where they remained for the entire trip Johnny Q held on stoutly for fiveeighths but tired in the final fur ¬ long and lost the place award to Shirley R who closed stoutly after running third for the major portion of the sprint Joe Green ock stepped the distance in 113 paid 480 straight and completed the Daily Double which was worth 1340
