REFLECTIONS By CHALLENGER Wnirlaway in Star and Stripes Fillies and Mares to Fore Saturday Sir Jeffrey Not Gold Cup Eligible Yearling Prices Under Discussion HOLLYWOOD Calif June 23 23Harry Harry Hart manager at Marwyck Ranch will go to South America to see the farms and buy mares The thirteen stakes at Arlington Park aggregate 115000 in added money Norman W Church and his trainer Woody Fitzgerald have gone to Kentucky in quest of 25000 worth of horses Walter Wells president of the California Breeders Association plans to buy daughters of Congreve and breed them to the Teddy stallion Kenty He will then sell the produce as yearlings in the South American markets Big Bill Knapp now a patrol judge at Hollywood Park plans to visit Saratoga during August Every Monday is Ladies Day at Arlington Park Bill Kyne of Bay Meadows is a daily visitor at Hollywood Park There is no truth in the rumor Louis B Mayer will retire from racing They stage one race a day on the grass course at Arlington Park Bruno Pagliai now building the course at Mexico City will make a quick trip to Los Angeles to buy materials Both Barbara Stanwyck and Zeppo Marx have sold their homes on the Marwyck Ranch property Mickey Rooney lost 18 on Saturday and got the devil from his boss Big Pebble versus Challedon in the American Handicap on July 14 Ted Williams of the Arlington Park publicity staff trains for opera singing at night In winning the fiftythird running of the Dwyer Stakes Whirlaway scored his eighth victory in twelve starts this year and with his winnings of 8075 has increased his total to 244186 approximately 200000 behind Seabiscuits mark as world moneywinning champion He ran the one and onequarter miles in 203 which is not exceptional and came through a claim of foul which had his backers on edge He now moves on to Chicago and according to reports will start in the 10000 added Stars and Stripes Handicap on July 4 an event that would add to his prestige With the 40000 added Classic to be run on July 26 there is a possibility the Calumet Cannonball can increase his earnings by approximately 50000 before August days roll around Although he has already started twelve times he has a busy campaign ahead There is a possibility he will remain in Chicago for the American Derby although it is more likely he will be sent to Saratoga Springs to be given a slight rest before the running of the Travers It is a tough task but he may come close to the 308275 established as a seasons earning record by Gallant Fox He could pass the 200000 mark in Chicago with the difference depending on the events in which he will start at Saratoga Springs and during the fall A popular horse in California it is expected he will be seen in action at Santa Anita this winter Louis B Mayers popular stable sent out a real surprise in Sir Jeffrey winner of the Inglewood Handicap in record time against one of the best fields of the California season Leading from start to finish Sir Jeffrey never left the issue in doubt Iron ¬ ically his name does not appear among the 75000 Gold Cup eligibles Mayers Beautiful II which also set a Hollywood track record last year was not named for the Cup By Sir Gallahad HI One Hour by Snob II Sir Jeffrey is of fashionable stock indeed His dam One Hour is a sixteenyearold mare out of Star Shoots daughter Daylight Saving which also produced Recreation Clock Tower Gusto Union and others One Hour won ten races and 27045 and since retirement to stud has also produced One Chance Gay Monarch Split Second Morning Magic Hour Gala Hour and Sir Jeffrey In this years consignment to the Saratoga sales R A Fairbairn is offering a chesnut filly by Blenheim II One Hour and needless to say this filly will be sought for her breeding as well as racing possibilities His victory in the Inglewood Handicap was the most important ever registered and brings his earnings for the year close to 13000 From all indications he is an improving horse and coming at this particular time gave Louis B Mayer one of his greatest thrills since he entered racing The movie official was congratulated on all sides Fillies and mares will have their moments in the Sun this coming Saturday At Delaware Park they will stage the 5000 added Polly Drummond Stakes for twoyearold fillies at five furlongs while the first weekend feature at Arlington Park in Chicago will be the 7500 added Arlington Matron Handicap at one mile for fillies and mares Out here at Hollywood Park they will stage the 10000 Vanity Handicap for fillies and mares at one and onesixteenth miles and a race which will virtually decide the championship among the weaker sex on the Pacific Coast Painted Veil winner of the Sequoia will once again match strides with Augury and Omelet and also such as Barrancosa the South American mare which has been showing a vorld of speed in her works over the Holly ¬ wood track These events are of interest in that they have a purpose in our breeding scheme If as we are told but subject to dispute that good race mares make good brood mares these are the kind of events which prove the good race mares The Sequoia was one of the most interesting races staged so far at Hollywood Park and there is every reason to believe the Vanity will be just as interesting Delaware Park recognized the importance of good races for the weaker sex by making the 10000 added Newcastle Handicap to be run on July 5 the feature closing event of the meeting meetingEach Each succeeding weekend demonstrates that the popularity of horse racing is still on the upgrade and that new records will be established before the customary should old acquaintance be forgot is sung on a day next fall at Empire City In travels across the country this writer has been amazed by the attendance at tracks and pleased with the expressions of confidence of older and wiser heads on the future of horse racing in this country Annual sales in California and Saratoga Springs will be followed by those in Kentucky and Maryland and from these sales must come a goodly portion of next seasons twoyearold crop Whether prices will be higher or lower than those of last year we do not pretend to know In a year such as this predictions are hardly in order although we must add that the present popularity and the conviction it will continue should see goodly throngs bidding for new racing material at the various sales points England recently staged her Derby and Oaks in that TohellwithHitler attitude We can see little fear that racing in this country in 1942 will be any different than it is right now If we are correct in that and others feel as we do then there is no reason why the demand for yearlings should not be brisk and the prices up to last years level We do know the quality and the quantity will be the same as last season
