INA DEAR DRIVES TO UPSET SCORE IN DETROIT OPENER OPENERVeteran Veteran Mare Garners Her First Purse of Year as Field Horse HorseDETROIT DETROIT Mich June 26 Ina Dear brown daughter of Rip Rap and Betty ONeal racing under the silks of J L Mac Knight won a driving threequarterlength victory in the first race at the Detroit Fair Grounds today H M Walkers favored Ada W finislied second in the sixfurlong sprint and was a half length before W P Beyer mans Ebony Fly at the final marker Ina Dears victory was a surprise and she re ¬ warded her followers with a 23 straight mutuel after stepping the distance over the fast track in 112 The winner was cou ¬ pled in the mutuel field fieldTwelve Twelve fillies and mares made up the field for the dash and starter Bryan Steele sent them off in good alignment after a halfminute delay at the post Ebony Fly was first to show out of the stalls and when she reached the quarter post was a head in pdvance of Buttons B while the latter led Ada W by a length and a half Ina Dear away slowly was hard hustled in the trip down the back stretch to gain a contending position and when the field reached the upper turn she was no better than fifth fifthADA ADA W RUNNERUP RUNNERUPEbony Ebony Fly continued to set the pace around the turn and approaching the stretch while Ada W moved up to displace Buttons B and the latter dropped back to third and was shortening her stride Onpj straight for the final drive Ebony Fly held a halflength advantage over Ada W Buttons B was third and the ultimate winner fourth Carr then worked hard on Ina Dear and his mount responded with fine burst of speed which carried her by the leaders a sixteenth from the finish Ada W held on well for second and the early pacemaker Ebony Fly lasted for minor honors honorsClear Clear and summerlike weather prevailed for the presentation of the good program at the local track today but despite the heat ia goodsized crowd turned out to view the sport The racing strip was at its best and rated fast for the earlier events Al ¬ though the major portion of the card was made up of horses from the claiming ranks wagering was brisk and betting rings in both the grandstand and clubhouse were well patronized throughout the afternoon and evening eveningThe The Porter Purse an allowance event for threeyearolds and upward which matched a small but select field of sprinters at six furlongs served as the feature attraction River Divide Farms Rock Maker was well supported for the dash while S S Ganos Sarah Loraine also came in for strong back ¬ ing E R Plunketts Huracon the M J Schmitt entry of Griers Star and True Star completed the field for the headliner which was decided as the fifth race
