SWING AND SWAY TAKES DIAMOND STATE STAKES CHOPPY SEA FOLLOWS WINNER ACROSS WIRE WIREMarks Marks Third Success in Delaware Feature for Greentree Stable Prevails by Pair of Lengths LengthsSTANTON STANTON Del June 26 The third stake of the Delaware Park meeting went the way of Mrs Payne Whitneys Greentree Stable when Swing and Sway a wellmade son of Equipoise Nedana was winner of the 6500 added Diamond State Stakes which had its fourth running as the feature of the Gov ¬ ernors Day program this afternoon Cherry Jam victorious in the Brandywine Handicap and Tangled winner of the Delaware Oaks were the other Greentree stake winners at this meeting meetingRunning Running the nine furlongs in 150 is Swin and Sway reached the finish two lengths before Wheatley Stables Choppy Sea and Mrs Walter M Jeffords Riding Light was third six lengths farther back Ingomar recently purchased by Mrs D B Miller was fourth and King Ranchs Itabo finished last lastThe The race was worth 7565 to the First Lady of the Turf and she rightly came by that honor in todays Diamond State Stakes renewal for except Itabo who is owned by Richard Kleberg Jr the other starters belong to women womenIt It was a great afternoon for Mrs Whitney John Gaver her trainer jockey Eddie Ar caro and Equipoise for all shared in a dou ¬ ble Shut Out a son of Equipoise who was entering competition was winner of the opening event on the program programSunny Sunny and hot weather prevailed for the Governors Day program which was viewed by Governor Baconbf Delaware and Gover ¬ nor OConor of Maryland Prior to the open ¬ ing of the program the chief executives and their aides were the guests of the manage ¬ ment at a luncheon in the Turf Club ClubSETS SETS NEW TRACK RECORD The track at its best enabled Shut Out to establish a new record for five and one half furlongs and the first casualty of the meeting came with the running of the stee ¬ plechase Royal Day fracturing a shoulder which necessitated his being destroyed The crowd was one of the largest for a weekday during the meeting but the public experienced trouble in locating the winners However the return on the Daily Double probably due to Shut Out winning the first race was one of the smallest of the season seasonGovernor Governor Bacon presented trainer John Gaver with the Donald P Ross Cup and a replica of the same The original will remain in its new owners possession until next year Mrs George D Widener furnished YOUIL Chance the winner of the 1940 re ¬ newal newalArcaro Arcaro rode another of his many fine races Swing and Sway broke to the inside when the start came but Arcaro soon had him straightened Itabo was rushed into a commanding lead during the run to the back stretch and Riding Light another speed merchant was in closest pursuit Arcaro was content to permit Itabo to increase his advantage but he sent Swing and Sway into second place before entering the final half mile Leaving the upper turn the Green tree colt made for Itabo and he drove to the front before entering the run for home Choppy Sea however was picking up his field in rapid order and at the stretch bend he too had passed the King Ranch repre sensative sensativeCHOPPY CHOPPY SEA MAKES BID BIDIt It appeared that Choppy Sea would gain on the winner but Arcaro kept him going under a strong hand ride rideAfter After dropping back Riding Light came again in the stretch and Ingomar ran up on Itabos heels when he attempted to get through on the inside of him in the stretch In the late stages Itabo drifted out and Ingomar came on to garner fourth laurels laurelsChoppy Choppy Sea was favorite over the winner and Itabo the third choice choiceThe The first casualty of the local steeple ¬ chase season came with the third race when Royal Day fell and broke a shoulder at the eleventh hedge and was destroyed The six yearold son of Flag Day a gelding was the property of Miss Bruner R Hunneman and was well back when he fell King Idan early pacemaker also fell at the same hedge Winning honors in the nearly two mile run went to D G Roods Bahama Knight whose previous engagement was over the flat He was a 19 to 1 hazard Big Severn was second and Frantz Wilhelm third GlenNaMpna lost his rider at the fourth brush King Idan was the early leader giving way to the winner going into the tenth hedge Big Severn who enjoyed favoritism was well back when the fatal accident occurred but moved forward with a rush rushW W Brown who rode Royal Day suf ¬ fered a broken collar bone and was removed to a Wilmington hospital
