Unity Is Keynote at NARC Convention Shot Put Earns First Purse of Season Need Pointed Out By Tom Underwood UnderwoodRacings Racings Contribution to War Relief Is Emphasized Nance Asks Aid for Veterans VeteransNEW NEW YORK N Y May 11 Twentytwo members of racing commissions from thir ¬ teen states met today in the Jade Room of the WaldorfAstoria for the first session of the annual summer meeting of the National Association of State Racing Commissioner Routine business occupied most of the morning session President Beverley Broun of West Virginia called the meeting to order orderTom Tom Underwood perennial secretary of the national association who also is secre ¬ tary of the Kentucky commission sounded the keynote of the meeting when he said in his annual report that this was a time when the need of unity among member associations was greater than that for uni ¬ formity of their rules rulesRacing Racing had carried on well through try ¬ ing times since the last meeting Under ¬ wood pointed out and had contributed con ¬ siderably to war relief agencies continuing to do so this year yearClement Clement A Nance secretary of the Illi ¬ nois Racing Board offered resolution that a vote of thanks be passed to every ¬ one connected with making racings con ¬ tribution to the war effort so substantial last year Nance also proposed that rac ¬ ing should make some additional contribu ¬ tion to a fund for the rehabilitation of disabled veterans of the war warPremiums Premiums for Breeders Endorsed EndorsedNew New York commission steward Francis P Dunne in one of the shortest speeches of the morning endorsed the premiums for breeders now given by the New York tracks He stated that he felt that the premium would be a great help to the many small producers of thoroughbreds thoroughbredsThe The commissioners were guests of The Jockey Club before the races at Belmont Park Those present were Leonard Rick ards and William S Potter Delaware Clement A Nance Illinois Tom R Under ¬ wood Kentucky Allen Mehle Louisiana Frank Small Jr and George P Mahoney Maryland Charles F Conners Bayard Tuckerman Jr and Harold R Allen Mas ¬ sachusetts William Dowling Michigan George W Conway and Charles A Allen New Hampshire John R Rogers and Fred H Ryan New Jersey Ashley T Cole and John Shevlin New York Raymond P Mc Leroy Rhode Island Paul F Pickette Washington Beverley Broun and Carl O Schmidt West Virginia and Benjamin Caddy assistant attorney general New York YorkThe The second and concluding days session will be held in the Waldorf tomorrow at which officers will be elected and the site of next years convention selected
