American Red Cross Gets 58270 From Gansetr GansetrDooley Dooley Thanks Fans for Splendid Support and Aid of Association AssociationPAWTUCKET PAWTUCKET R I May 11 Judge James E Dooley executive head of Nar ¬ ragansett Park signed his name this morning to a check for the American Red Cross Providence Chapter for the amount of 5827053 This splendid contribution was made pos ¬ sible by the dedication of last Saturdays racing at Narragansett to the organization now playing its usual great part in war ¬ time Donating the best day of its meeting for this purpose the track management ar ¬ ranged that its share of the parimutuels wagering the gate admissions program sales and fees from concessionaires should be turned over to the Red Cross CrossFrom From this gross amount was deducted only the actual operating expenses for the afternoon No general maintenance costs which run into high figures were charged While all employees of the track were paid as usual from the days receipts salaries of the corporation officers and executive heads were met by the association The check for 5827053 will be handed to Red Cross officials tomorrow It was originally suggested that Narragansett contribute only the 16000 that the Providence Chapter fell short in its quota during the recent drive for funds fundsExpressing Expressing his thanks to the racing public who made Saturdays magnificent success possible Judge Dooley said saidThrough Through the publics generous support and through the willingness of racing asso ¬ ciations to donate their plants and the services of their trained staffs racing has fully justified its continuance dtiririg war ¬ time We are proud that we have been able to do our part and we hope to be able to do still more Plans for our autumn meet ¬ ing now are being made and we are con ¬ fident that when the combined effort of racing in 1943 is totaled something really worthwhile will have been accomplished Earlier in the week the Narragansetfc Racing Association had donated a check for 7000 to the Catholic Charities drive which opened May 16 and runs through May 26 At its two meetings last year Narragansett contributed heavily to war relief agencies and local charities by rais ¬ ing for distribution the sum of 18312831 At its three wartime meetings Narragan ¬ sett already has contributed 24839884 to the national war effort effortNarragansetts Narragansetts autumn meeting runs from August 9 to September 25
