s sTwo Two Fillies May Seek Honors in Crete Five of Sex Have Won Lincoln Stake StakeMiss Miss Dogwood and Pig Tails Prominent Candidates for Saturdays 5000 Event EventSTICKNEY STICKNEY HI May 19 Two of the principal contenders for honors in Satur ¬ days running of the Crete Handicap the first of six stakes that the Lincoln Fields Jockey Club will present at Hawthorne are fillies OSrownell Combs Miss Dogwood and the Woolford Farms Pig Tails The latter demonstrated her fitness for battle this weekend when she sprinted to victory in the Colleens Purse here yesterday while Miss Dogwood has her success in the Phoe ¬ nix Handicap during the Keeneland meet ¬ ing and her excellent private training since that time to recommend her Pig Tails can run on any kind of a track and she showed in winning the Colleens that mud is no handicap to her In this event she broke in front of her four rivals and was never headed at six furlongs the same distance over which the Crete Hand ¬ icap will be decided Her weight Tuesday was 116 but on Saturday she will have to shoulder only 108 108Needs Needs One More Work WorkMiss Miss Dogwood has not yet been seen under colors here this spring but her trainer J G Goode says she will be ready for competition this weekend if he can get one more good work in her Because of the condition of the track Goode has hesitated to ask her to do more than gallop over the course but he may yet be able to subject her to the drill he believes she needs to fit her for her best on Saturday SaturdayFillies Fillies have played a prominent part in the history of the Crete Handicap for of the fifteen previous runnings of this fea ¬ ture five have fallen to members of the gentler sex They were Pansy Walker in 1930 Slim Rosie in 1935 Marica in 1937 Silverette in 1939 and Dolly Val in 1940 Silverette was nine years old when she won the Crete while Marica set a time record for the stake when she covered the six furlongs in 110 to achieve her victory victoryOnly Only three eligibles for the Crete were seen in training moves this morning They were Signator a stablemate of Pig Tails John M Hutchins Wishbone and John Marschs To a Tee TeeWorking Working around the dogs Signator breezed five furlongs in 107 Wishbone covered the same ground in 108 and To a Tee stepped three furlongs through the mud in 41
