CHARLOTTESVILLE Va May 19 Morven Stud mares do well as producers Seven of the seventeen at Whitney Stones Picturesque nursery here aad thirtythree foals that have raced That group ac ¬ counted for some 200odd races Some of those events have been stakes stakesThe The late Charles A Stone founder of this 1800acre institution believed in hav ¬ ing brood mares of proved lineage His son Whitney is also of that opinion and is an advocate of the old adage that only good mares mated with good stallions will produce good stock Therefore each year successful sires are chosen to serve the good stock stockThis This season the seventeen matrons were bred to seven stallions including Pompey in whom Stone has an interest and who is one of the stars at the adjacent Ellerslie Farm of Arthur B Hancock Pompey and Flares the latter also stands at the neighboring establishment served the greatest number of mares The former had four consorts while the Gallant Fox stallion hero of the 1938 Ascot Gold Cup and brother of the Kentucky Derby win ¬ ner Omaha was mated with six mares Other sires employed were Head Play Ja copo Rhodes Scholar Snark and Stimulus Although none of the mares have as yet delivered outstanding horses the produce has been better than average It is inter ¬ esting to note that Morvens best offerings have speed as their forte Possibly the most outstanding example was Vander Pool an exceptionally fast horse As a twoyearold in 1930 he was unbeaten He won fifteen races in succession being able to keep his score clear through Equipoises disqualification in the Youthful Stakes In all he won nineteen races and 52095 Among other stake winners that have come from this establishment are Light ¬ ning Bolt winner of thirteen races and 35245 Nations Taste who most cases they are the offspring of some of the first mares brought here In 1926 when breeding was instituted a mere handful of mares com ¬ posed the harem As foals were dropped and Charles and son Whitney became more interested in breeding some of the pro ¬ duce was reserved and additional stock was purchased always fillies either at private terms or at yearling sales salesThe The record of accomplishments by this nursery proves that the right mares and the right stallions were mated Naturally because of the share in Pompey he has annually served the greater number of the farms mares maresPompey Pompey was an exceptionally good per ¬ former and he has done well at stud As a sire he has begotten winners of 994 races who earned 1532275 to the end of 1942 His principal winners to date have been Ladysman topnotch twoyearold of his year and winner of the Arlington Futurity j Hopeful United States Hotel Stakes and various other fixtures and 134310 Fom poon a leading juvenile of his year and early winter book favorite for the Ken ¬ tucky Derby Osculator Pomposity the Fu ¬ turity winner Some Chance the good mare Polonaise and many others J JBred Bred by William R Coe Pompey as a performer was a solid chunky horse A bay he was foaled in 1923 being by Sun Briar and Corcyras good daughter Cleo ¬ patra winner of eight races and 55937 at a time when she had to compete against good horses and mares maresBrought Brought to the races by W H Perry Pompey won his initial start in the spring at Jamaica as a twoyearold He went on to win such events as the Futurity carrying 127 pounds the Hopeful United States Hotel Stakes East View Wood Stakes and others In all he won thir ¬ teen races and earned 143495
