Cornells Desire to Breed Good Horses Balked by Fate FateKENT KENT Texas June 7 H D Cornell owner of the Bar C Ranch here has a keen interest in thoroughbred breeding despite an unfortunate chain of ill luck which has upset his plans to breed a really high gradethoroughbred Through his re ¬ lationship to the Reynolds brothers Cor ¬ nell has several good mares here but in Kentucky at Douglas Davis High Hope Stud the breeder keeps or rather kept a quartet of really standout brood mares They were Laura Kiev Enchantress Lirma and Lucky Ducky and from them Cornell hoped to get a colt by the great English sire Mahmoud MahmoudHe He first sent Laura Kiev to the imported stallion and she died soon after Then he bred Lirma to Mahmoud and this year before foaling Lirma died of internal hemorrhage Enchantress by Man o War was the next one to feel the icy blast of death which came to her in the guise of lightning killing her instantly The foal by her side was saved although the little fellow was badly stunned by the bolt that killed his dam Lucky Ducky is the re ¬ maining mare and the Kent sportsman hopes in due time to get a foal by Mah ¬ moud from this one
