Preakness Week Opens With Jennings Challamore Heads EightHorse Field FieldNew New Moon Salto Sollure Oppose Eastwood Sprinter In Handicap at Pimlico PimlicoBALTIMORE BALTIMORE Md May 6 The six ¬ teenth running of the 7500 added Jen ¬ nings Handicap hightlights Mondays program at Pimlico This initial feature of Preakness Week has drawn eight prom ¬ inent sprinters from the ranks of threes yearolds and older with E C Eastwoods Challamore highweighted at 122 pounds one pound more than H Guy Bedwells Harford Handicap winner Sollure will tote Next in line of racing secretarys Charles J McLennans estimation is Henry L L Straus New Moon imposed with 115 pounds This fouryearold Marylandbred son of Discovery recently registered an upset in the Baltimore Spring Handicap taking the measure of such as Piccadilly Porters Cap and Sollure All three are en ¬ tered in the sixfurlong Jennings JenningsRounding Rounding out the field for what borders on a wide open affair are William Hells Salto slated to carry 110 pounds Brandy wine Stables Pompion 111 pounds Mrs Donald Woodwards Piccadilly 110 pounds Charles S Howards Porters Cap 104 pounds and G T Strothers Abrasion 104 pounds poundsWith With the exception of Salto and Challa ¬ more others in the tilt have already been seen in action here Salto is a newcomer to this sector However he is not an unknown At times the fiveyearold has proved an able performer and it will be recalled that last year he turned in an exceptionally im ¬ pressive effort in the Massachusetts Handi ¬ cap as the runnerup to Market Wise He was second to True North in his last outing outingPompion Pompion Can Step at Times TimesPompion Pompion has been seen frequently here in the past A rather shifty sprinter but often at a disadvantage because of en ¬ countering rivals just a bit too hard to handle he nevertheless has on occasion risen above himself so to speak in besting prominent opponents when in receipt of a weight pull pullHero Hero of the Capital Heiser and Ritchie Handicaps here last fall Challamore has always been very much at home over the local strip He has been training satisfac ¬ torily and may very well be at tops topsAlso Also partial to this track is Sollure a real speedy one While the son of Soleil du Midi carried 117 pounds to his Harford triumph he did not appear to like the fivepound increase in the Baltimore Spring and no doubt this is what caused him to weaken in the drive After setting the early pace while fighting it out with Piccadilly he stopped badly through the stretch Piccadilly did however put up a good try in that feature in spite of being beaten and Porters Cap had no real ex ¬ cuse He was not hurried in the early stages and the manner in which he made up ground in the drive indicated that he is improving with racing racingThe The week ahead promises to be one of the most interesting of this 28day meet ¬ ing This of course is only natural in view of the important Preakness Stakes in the offing One of three fixtures for three yearolds comprising the Triple Crown others being the Kentucky Derby and Bel mont Stakes the Preakness on Saturday climaxes this combined meeting of Mary ¬ lands four major tracks In the meantime on Tuesday will be offered the 5000 added Survivor Stakes a threeyearold event at a mile and onesixteenth on Wednesday the Pimlico Oaks carrying 15000 in en ¬ dowed money and exclusively for fillies at a mile and onesixteenth Thursday the 5000 added Carroll Handicap for fillies and mares three years old and older at six furlongs on Friday the Pimlico Nursery Stakes a twoyearold feature at five fur ¬ longs and Saturday the Preakness
