Belmonf Schedules 7Chase Stake Today TodayNine Nine Accomplished Fencers Headed by Rouge Dragon Go In International Handicap HandicapELMONT ELMONT L I N Y May 10 The Westchester Racing Association will offer the first jumping stakes of the Belmont spring meeting tomorrow the 4000 Inter ¬ national Steeplechase Handicap at about two miles This throughthefield fixture has drawn a field of nine accomplished leapers who will endeavor to negotiate the 12 obstacles most formidable of which is the water jump situated directly in front of the stands standsThe The International is headed by M A Cushmans Rouge Dragon with the sub ¬ stantial burden of 161 pounds The son of Annapolis will be coupled with W H Lips combs Mercator who gets in with 148 Rouge Dragon is tabbed by some experts as the potential chase champion of the year Last season he won eight of his 13 starts including four stakes Rouge Dragon and Mercator finished onetwo in the Jervis Spencer Steeplechase at Pimlico last Fri ¬ day and they had Caddie Greek Flag and Iron Shot behind them all three of whom are entered in the International InternationalOf Of that trio Rokeby Stables Caddie ran much the best race finishing third and beaten less than two lengths He has a fourpound weight shift in his favor against each of the entry and that might make a difference Brookmeade Stables Greek Flag who ran sixth in that race made a slight bobble early in the race and is in with the light burden for a jumper of 136 pounds poundsIron Iron Shot Winner Last Year YearIron Iron Shot won the International for Miss Ella Widener last year and was making his 1944 debut in the Pimlico test While he was never in contention in that race a bet ¬ ter effort may be expected tomorrow He won four stakes last year in a busy cam ¬ paign of 18 races all but one of which was a stake stakeThe The balance of the International field is composed of Mrs F Ambrose Clarks The Beak and Chesapeake with 136 pounds each Mrs E duPont Weirs Burma Road 134 and Bayard Sharps Knights Quest 149 However this first of the Belmont chase stakes appears on paper to be a rerun of the Jervis Spencer with Rouge Dragon and Mercator again favored to turn back Caddie and the others No riders have been assigned to the CushmanLipscomb entry as yet but W Owen and J S Har ¬ rison rode them in their Maryland adven ¬ ture and as neither has another mount in the race they may be aboard again to ¬ morrow morrowThe The most valuable offering on tomorrows program of eight races is the 5000 Re ¬ quital for class B and C horses at a mile and onehalf but this arduous test has drawn only three candidates While this factor will do nothing to swell the tote receipts the trio engaged are capable of providing a good contest They are Isador Biebers Moon Maiden 113 Mrs T Chris ¬ tophers Grey Wing 118 and Ensign Town send B Martins Bolingbroke 117 117Moon Moon Maiden and Grey Wing both raced well at Jamaica the former being narrowly beaten by her stablemate Night Glow in her last appearance Bolingbroke has not raced since March 4 when he was no factor in the Widener at Hialeah but has been working well at this track and was a crack stayer last year winning the 25000 New York Handicap among other stakes
